Product Description
These little Christmas Stockings are designed for beginner knitters, so you do not need any sock making experience to knit these decorations. You can knit the bottom of the stocking in stripes or one block colour, and the top can be knitted in a rib pattern or seed stitch (British moss stitch). Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the stockings are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For beginners and above, other techniques used include seaming, knits, purls, increases and decreases.
Christmas Stockings Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
Christmas Stockings is a downloadable knitting pattern designed to create festive holiday decorations. These stockings are small, decorative pieces perfect for adding seasonal charm to your home. The pattern allows crafters to make individual stockings in multiple colorways, making them ideal for creating coordinated sets or personalized holiday displays.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, making it an accessible introduction to stocking construction. Key techniques employed include:
- Casting on to establish the foundation stitches at the bottom edge of the stocking
- Decreasing using knit two together (k2tog) to shape the stocking
- Increasing using knit into the front and back (kfb) for shaping and construction
- Seaming using a darning or tapestry needle to join pieces together
- Color work with multiple yarn shades to create visual interest and definition
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches appropriate for beginner-level crafters:
- Knit stitch (k) - the fundamental stitch forming the fabric base
- Purl stitch (p) - used in combination with knit stitches for texture and design
- Knit two together (k2tog) - a single stitch decrease for shaping
- Knit into front and back (kfb) - a single stitch increase for expanding the fabric
Materials
The Christmas Stockings pattern requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 100% acrylic DK weight yarn (also called double knitting or light worsted weight), with each stocking using only a few grammes of yarn. The sample stockings shown in the pattern photographs were knitted in Stylecraft Special DK in three coordinating shades: Yarn A in "Grape" (purple), Yarn B in "Cypress" (green), and Yarn C in "Storm Blue" (blue)
- Needles: A pair of 3.75mm (US 5) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm
- Additional tools: A 3.75mm (US F/5) crochet hook and a darning or tapestry needle for seaming the finished pieces
Pattern Details
The pattern begins with casting on 18 stitches in Yarn B using straight 3.75mm needles, starting at the bottom edge of the stocking. The beginner-friendly difficulty level makes this project suitable for knitters new to garment or decoration construction, while the use of multiple yarn colors adds visual sophistication to the finished pieces. This free downloadable pattern from independent designer Amanda Berry provides complete instructions for creating charming handmade Christmas decorations.
