Product Description
Our Christmas Cupcake complete with festive holly is made in one piece from the bottom upwards, so there is only one seam to sew at the end.
Three double pins are used from rows 7-12, to ease the tension from multiple increases (not knitted in the round). You will also need to pick up and knit a picot edge. The holly leaves and berries are worked separately and sewn on, along with little beads for a scattering of sugar.
Christmas Cupcake by Louisa Noble
What is Being Made
The Christmas Cupcake is a knitted toy designed to resemble a festive holiday cupcake. This three-dimensional decorative piece features a white cupcake case, brown cake layer, and cream-colored icing, adorned with green and red holly and berries. The finished toy measures approximately 5cm in diameter at the base and 5cm in height, making it a small, collectible handmade ornament or decoration.
Construction Method and Techniques
This knitted cupcake is constructed in one continuous piece from the bottom upwards, which minimizes finishing work by requiring only one seam to be sewn at the end. The pattern employs strategic increases to build the three-dimensional cupcake shape, beginning with a small cast-on and expanding outward. A picot edge is picked up and knitted to create a decorative finished edge, adding a delicate detail typical of cupcake liners. Double-pointed needles are used for the initial rounds, and the pattern introduces three double pins starting from the 7th row to manage stitches across multiple sections as the piece expands.
Stitches Used
- Cast-on: Used to establish the initial 5 stitches at the base
- Purl (P): Creates textured rows throughout the construction
- Knit (K): Forms the primary fabric and right-side rows
- Increases (Inc 1): Executed by knitting into the front and back of a stitch to add stitches and shape the cupcake's expanding form
- Picot edge: A decorative edging created by picking up and knitting stitches, adding a refined finish
Materials Required
Yarn: The project uses DK weight yarn in multiple colors to construct different components. White DK (50g) forms the cupcake case, brown DK (30g) creates the cake layer, and cream DK (30g) is used for the icing. Green and red DK (20g combined) are worked into the holly leaves and berry embellishments.
Needles and Notions: A pair of size 11 (3mm) double-pointed needles serves as the primary knitting tool, with 3 additional double pins of the same size (3mm) required for managing stitches during the expansion phase. The pattern also calls for 10–15 white or clear seed beads to represent sugar crystals scattered across the icing, a small piece of stiff cardboard for internal structure, and polyester or wool stuffing to give the toy its three-dimensional form.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches—knit, purl, and increases—are fundamental, the pattern requires competence with double-pointed needles, managing multiple needle sets simultaneously, and understanding how increases create shaping. The picot edge technique and the coordination needed to transition between the cupcake case, cake, and icing sections add complexity beyond beginner-level knitting.
Finishing and Embellishment
After the main knitting is complete, the toy requires stuffing and assembly. The long yarn tail left from the initial cast-on is used to sew the single seam, closing the cupcake. Seed beads are sewn onto the cream icing to create a sparkling sugar crystal effect, and the holly and berries—knitted separately or as part of the pattern—are attached to complete the Christmas theme.
