Choose Your Own Adventure Skirt by Corrine Walcher
What is Being Made
The Choose Your Own Adventure Skirt is a custom-fitted knitted skirt designed by Corrine Walcher to be worn as a coordinating piece with the Business in the Front cardigan. This skirt features a decorative hem lace that showcases the legs while maintaining modest coverage. The finished size is entirely customizable based on individual body measurements, making it a versatile project for knitters seeking a personalized garment.
Design and Construction
This skirt is constructed using a recipe-style pattern that allows knitters to adjust dimensions to their specific measurements rather than following a standard size chart. The design incorporates a lace hem as a prominent design feature, which adds visual interest and an elegant drape to the lower edge of the skirt. The pattern was specifically created to showcase gradient yarn colorways, particularly designed as a companion to coordinate with other pieces in a coordinated wardrobe.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The pattern employs lace knitting techniques for the hem detail, which requires intermediate-level knitting skills. The lace construction involves yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns that allow the legs to be visible while maintaining the structural integrity of the garment. The body of the skirt utilizes circular knitting on a long circular needle to create seamless construction in the round.
Yarn and Materials
- Primary Yarn: Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio DK in gradient sets (5 mini skeins of 100% Superwash Merino, 144 yards per 60g each) combined with Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio DK solid color (100% Superwash Merino, 275 yards per 100g)
- Yardage Requirements: 2 to 5 skeins of the main color, with total yardage varying based on individual measurements. The sample project used approximately 25 grams for each gradient color and 125 grams of the main color
- Needles: US #5/3.75mm circular needle, 32 inches or longer (longer needles recommended for larger finished sizes)
- Fiber Content: 100% Superwash Merino wool, which provides durability and easy care
Yarn Weight Compatibility
This pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn as the primary specification, though the pattern accommodates a range of yarn weights including 3-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, Aran, sport, and worsted weights. This flexibility allows knitters to substitute different yarn brands and weights while maintaining the integrity of the design, provided appropriate needle size adjustments are made to achieve the correct gauge.
Skill Level
The Choose Your Own Adventure Skirt is classified as an intermediate difficulty project. Knitters should be comfortable with circular knitting, reading lace charts, and making custom adjustments to pattern measurements. The customization aspect requires some mathematical calculation to adapt the pattern to individual body measurements.
