Knit up a penguin! Chilly Charlie is the perfect little present for penguin fans. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the penguin is knitted on single pointed needles (not in the round). Charlie is worked in DK yarns (double knitting/light worsted). He’s chock-full of simple increases and decreases, in garter and stocking stitch. Use a mix of appliqué and intarsia to create his white tummy and inquisitive eyes, with sweet black buttons for the finishing touch. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Chilly Charlie Penguin is a knitted toy design created by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a stuffed penguin figure suitable for children or as a decorative handmade item. The finished toy is constructed from multiple knitted pieces that are seamed together and filled with toy stuffing to create a three-dimensional plush character.
The pattern calls for 100% acrylic DK yarn (also referred to as double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply). A minimum of 30g in each of four yarn shades is required: White, Yellow, Black, and Red. The original sample used discontinued yarns, but Amanda Berry recommends substituting with Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both of which are 100% acrylic DK weight alternatives suitable for this project.
Additional materials include a 200g bag of toy filling for stuffing the completed penguin, two 6mm diameter domed black buttons for eyes, and a 4cm pompom maker for creating decorative details.
This pattern requires 3.25mm (US 3) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm to 30cm. Essential notions include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces together, bobbins for managing intarsia colour-work sections, and a tape measure or ruler for checking gauge and measurements throughout the project.
Chilly Charlie Penguin employs intarsia colour-work as a primary technique, allowing the knitter to create the penguin's distinctive multi-colored design by working with different yarn colors in specific sections of the fabric. This method requires the use of bobbins to manage yarn strands and prevent excessive tangling when switching between the four yarn shades.
The construction method involves knitting individual pieces that are subsequently seamed together using a tapestry needle. The toy is then stuffed with filling to achieve its three-dimensional form. Additional embellishment includes:
As an intermediate-level project, this pattern assumes the knitter has foundational knowledge of basic knitting stitches and is ready to advance to color-work techniques and toy construction methods.
