Child's Crochet Ruffle Skirt (9 Months – 5 Years)
What is Being Made
This is a child's crochet skirt designed by Leanna's Designs, available in four sizes ranging from 9–18 months through 4–5 years. The skirt features decorative ruffles created through specialized crochet techniques and is secured at the waist with elastic. The garment is designed as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for intermediate-level crocheters.
Sizes and Measurements
The pattern includes the following size options:
- 9–18 months: Chest 46–51 cm (18–20 inches)
- 18–24 months: Chest 53 cm (21 inches)
- 2–3 years: Chest 59 cm (23 inches)
- 4–5 years: Chest 64 cm (25 inches)
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The skirt employs an intermediate-level construction method that combines regular yarn with scarf yarn to create the ruffle effect. The foundation row is worked by folding scarf yarn over the back and picking up loops while working with regular yarn, creating a textured base. This dual-yarn technique allows the scarf yarn loops to create the distinctive ruffle appearance when the garment is worn. The pattern uses UK crochet terminology and involves working in rounds, with the ruffle structure built into the stitch pattern itself.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (Ch): Used for foundation and spacing throughout the pattern
- Double Crochet (Dc): UK terminology; equivalent to US single crochet
- Treble Crochet (Tr): UK terminology; equivalent to US double crochet, used as a primary stitch in the skirt body
- Treble Decrease (Tr Dec): Used for shaping and stitch reduction
- Slip Stitch (ss): Used to join rounds
Materials and Tools
The pattern requires the following materials for all sizes:
- Yarn: 8-ply (DK weight) regular yarn – 1 ball of 100g for all sizes; plus 1 ball of 100g scarf yarn (sport weight) for creating the ruffle effect
- Elastic: 10mm (½ inch) width elastic for the waist
- Hook: 4mm crochet hook (US size 6, UK size 8)
The use of DK weight yarn combined with sport weight scarf yarn creates an interesting textural contrast that produces the ruffle detail characteristic of this design. The 4mm hook is appropriately sized for working with DK yarn and allows for the precise stitch definition needed in the ruffle construction.
Pattern Difficulty
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses basic crochet stitches, the technique of incorporating scarf yarn loops into the foundation row and managing the dual-yarn construction requires some crochet experience and attention to stitch placement. Crocheters should be comfortable with reading patterns, maintaining consistent tension, and working in rounds.
