Materials For this crochet wolf you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/ 3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn, grey (1/3 of a 100 yard skein), light grey (1/4), a bit of dark grey and some colours for the scarf. The quantities are estimates. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 0057, 0054 and 0058. Scarf: 1407 & 9421.
Chief the Wolf Crochet Toy Pattern
What Is Being Made
Chief is a crochet wolf toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This amigurumi-style stuffed animal is a beginner-friendly project that creates a finished wolf approximately 6 inches (15 cm) in sitting height when made with the recommended yarn. The pattern uses standard American crochet terminology and is suitable for crafters new to amigurumi construction.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Chief wolf pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques ideal for beginners learning to create three-dimensional toys. The doll is worked in the round using spiral construction, a common method in amigurumi that creates seamless, continuous fabric. The pattern incorporates color changes throughout the design, with detailed instructions provided for managing yarn transitions. The pattern recommends using a stitch marker to clearly identify the beginning of each round, which helps maintain consistent stitch placement as you work upward in spirals. Color-coded instructions highlight more complex color changes, while simpler transitions are noted at the end of round descriptions for easier reference.
Crochet Stitches Used
While the PDF excerpt does not specify every individual stitch by name, the pattern uses standard crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi construction. The technique of working in rounds and spirals suggests the use of single crochet and increases/decreases typical of toy-making patterns. Proper color changes are executed by completing the final loop of each stitch in the new yarn color, ensuring clean transitions between shades.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends a fuzzy yarn for optimal results, using Istex Lètt lopi, which is 100% wool, for the pictured sample. The finished size of the wolf is dependent on both the yarn weight used and individual crochet tension, so crafters may wish to experiment with yarn choices and adjust details like eye size accordingly. Standard crochet hooks appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required, though the specific hook size is referenced in the full pattern document.
Pattern Notes for Crafters
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning to familiarize yourself with the structure and color-change instructions
- The finished size may vary based on yarn choice and how tightly you crochet
- A fuzzy or textured yarn enhances the wolf's appearance and realistic fur effect
- Use a stitch marker to track round beginnings when working in spirals
- Color changes should always be completed in the final loop of the previous stitch to ensure the new color appears on the hook
- Beginners may benefit from practicing color changes before starting the full project
