Product Description
Cheetah Print Cowl - Cheetah print has been in style for the last decade and I’m still loving it. Something about mimicking nature is so desirable in fashion and I think even as this trend comes and goes, it’s just a classic design that will always be cool in my opinion. I have chunky cheetah print booties and multiple cheetah print tops, just call me Janice from Friends. “Janice” and “Janine” are close enough anyways.

What is Being Made
The Cheetah Print Cowl is a cozy neck accessory designed as a beginner-friendly knitting project. This cowl features a distinctive cheetah print colorwork pattern and measures 16 inches wide by 12.5 inches in height when lying flat, making it an ideal layering piece for added warmth and style.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs stranded colorwork, also known as fair-isle knitting, to create the cheetah print design. The cowl is knit in the round, which creates a seamless tubular fabric. A key technique highlighted in the pattern is float catching, where floats (the yarn strands running across the back of the work) are caught every 5 to 6 stitches to prevent long loops on the interior of the cowl and ensure a secure, wearable finished piece.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout this cowl is stockinette stitch in the round, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a V-shaped stitch pattern on the front and bumpy texture on the back. The stockinette base provides an ideal canvas for the colorwork pattern to stand out clearly.
Materials and Yarn
This project uses super chunky weight yarn (category 6), which allows for quick knitting and rapid project completion. The pattern calls for Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn in three colors:
- Main Colour (MC): Fisherman (White) – 2 skeins or 120 yards
- Contrasting Colour A (CCA): Black – 1 skein or 35 yards
- Contrasting Colour B (CCB): Peanut – 1 skein or 20 yards
The yarn is composed of 80% acrylic and 20% wool, providing durability and easy care. Suitable yarn substitutions include Loops & Threads Cozy Wool or any comparable category 6 super bulky weight yarn that matches the specified gauge.
Gauge and Finished Specifications
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 4 inches = 10 stitches by 11 rows when knit in stockinette stitch in the round and blocked. Achieving proper gauge ensures the cowl reaches its intended finished measurements of 16 inches in width and 12.5 inches in height.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, this cowl is accessible to knitters new to colorwork techniques. The use of super chunky yarn means fewer stitches to manage, and the straightforward stockinette stitch combined with clear float-catching instructions makes this an excellent introduction to stranded colorwork knitting.
