Chamomile Knit Gloves and Mittens by BabyCocktails
Project Overview
Chamomile is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails for creating a pair of fitted gloves or mittens. This downloadable PDF pattern offers flexibility in yarn choice, allowing knitters to work with either fingering weight yarn doubled or worsted weight yarn at gauge, making it an accessible project for various yarn stash options.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of hand-warming mittens or gloves sized to fit an 8-inch (20.25 centimeter) wrist circumference. The finished mittens measure 11 inches (28 centimeters) in length from top to bottom, providing full coverage for the hand and lower forearm. The design features a detail panel that remains visible and uninterrupted throughout the construction, making it an aesthetically pleasing project with thoughtful construction planning.
Knitting Techniques and Methods
The Chamomile pattern is worked in the round using small circumference knitting techniques. The designer recommends the magic loop method as the preferred construction approach, as this technique keeps the detail panel from being split across multiple needles and allows knitters to easily view both the top and bottom of the hand as they work. Alternatively, knitters may use double-pointed needles (DPNs) or their preferred method for working small circumferences in the round.
The pattern is designed with sizing flexibility in mind. Knitters wishing to create an alternate size mitt may adjust the cast-on stitch count based on their desired wrist measurement, using a multiple of 2 stitches. When altering the width of the mittens, stitches should be distributed appropriately across the working needles.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Chamomile mittens are worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for fitted hand wear. The gauge is established at 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured on a blocked stockinette swatch, providing a reliable foundation for accurate sizing and fit.
Yarn and Materials
The sample mittens featured in the pattern were knit using Plucky Knitter Bello Fingering yarn, a premium blend of 55% Merino wool and 45% cashmere. This fingering weight yarn provides 380 yards (347 meters) per skein.
Knitters have two yarn options for completing this project:
- Fingering Weight Option: 350 yards (320 meters) of fingering weight yarn, worked doubled to reach the required gauge
- Worsted Weight Option: 175 yards (160 meters) of worsted weight yarn worked at gauge
The doubled fingering weight approach allows knitters to use lighter-weight yarns from their stash while achieving the proper fabric density and warmth for mittens.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires US size 7 (4.5 millimeter) needles, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Needles should be suitable for working small circumferences, whether in magic loop format, DPN configuration, or the knitter's preferred method for in-the-round construction.
Additional notions needed to complete the project include:
- A darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
- A stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings
- Waste yarn or a stitch holder for securing stitches during construction
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Chamomile pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in cast-on techniques, stockinette stitch, and working in the round. The small circumference knitting and attention to maintaining a visible detail panel throughout construction make this a suitable project for knitters looking to build proficiency beyond beginner level while creating practical, wearable items.
