Product Description

This is not for the timid.

The pattern is for a rectangular shawl. The main design is a large (160 stitches by 232 rows), irregular, non-repeating Celtic knot worked as a cable. There is also a second, smaller (58 stitches by 63 rows) cable design.

The main cable uses my method of creating a raised horizontal strand.

I strongly recommend using 17 stitch markers to help track your location in the chart.

The sample required approximately 1720 yards (1573m) of a 2-ply, lace-weight wool and 2 cones - 622 yds (568m) - of Habu's N-69 Copper Bamboo.

The intarsia effect was created by dropping the Copper Bamboo thread and working the cable strands using only the background wool. The pattern includes basic instructions for the shawl, yarn requirements, an explanation of the technique used for the horizontal strands, 5 pages of charts, and some images showing close-ups how the horizontal strands are worked.

Celtic Knot Shawl by Nancy Hand

Project Overview

The Celtic Knot Shawl is an advanced-level knitting pattern featuring intricate cable designs inspired by traditional Celtic motifs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 18 inches by 62 inches (45.72 by 157.48 centimeters), making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The design showcases two distinct cable patterns of varying complexity, combining traditional knitting techniques with modern construction methods.

Cable Design and Structure

The shawl features two prominent cable designs as its focal points. The main Celtic knot cable spans 160 stitches by 232 rows, creating the dominant visual element of the piece. A secondary, smaller cable measures 58 stitches by 63 rows and provides complementary detail. Rather than adding extensive borders, the designer incorporated only 4 stitches on each side worked in garter stitch, allowing the cable designs themselves to serve as the primary design feature. This minimalist border approach emphasizes the intricate knotwork at the heart of the pattern.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced pattern employs cable knitting as its primary technique, with particular emphasis on horizontal cable construction. The pattern includes detailed instructions for executing the horizontal cable technique, supported by 5 pages of charts: 4 pages dedicated to the larger Celtic knot cable and 1 page for the smaller cable design. The background fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which provides contrast to the textured cables. Garter stitch is used for the minimal side borders. The pattern also recommends using 17 stitch markers as optional tools to assist in tracking the complex cable placements throughout the project.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for lace weight yarn, combining two distinct fibers for the finished sample. The primary materials include Habu Textiles N-69 20/1 Copper Bamboo in Color #33, requiring 2 cones totaling 622 yards (568 meters), which serves as an accent yarn worked in combination with the main yarn. The background color is lace weight wool in off-white, requiring 1,720 yards (1,573 meters) to complete the shawl as pictured. These yarns are worked together throughout much of the pattern, creating a blended fabric with both structure and delicate drape.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern requires US 3 (3.25 millimeter) needles as the primary tool, along with a cable needle of approximately the same dimension for manipulating stitches during cable crossings. The specified gauge is 34 stitches and 42 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) measured in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this advanced pattern, as the cable dimensions and overall shawl measurements depend on consistent stitch and row gauge throughout the project.

Pattern Contents and Difficulty

Classified as an advanced knitting project, the Celtic Knot Shawl pattern is best suited for experienced knitters comfortable with cable techniques and chart reading. The downloadable PDF includes basic directions for construction, 5 pages of detailed charts for accurate cable placement, a comprehensive description of the horizontal cable technique, yarn requirements for the pictured shawl, and photographic images showing details of the horizontal cable work. The pattern begins with casting on 126 stitches using the wool and Copper Bamboo yarns held together, with increases worked across a wrong-side row to reach 168 stitches before the main cable sections commence.
