Product Description

This is my ''Irish'' Afghan. I designed it while I was planning a trip to Ireland and even made some of it while I was there. It is made up of 5 panels that are 12'' wide x 72'' long and seamed together. Each panel has a large Celtic Braid running up the center and columns of Hugs and Kisses (X's and O's) on either side of it with regular cables running up each outer edge. It is finished with a Triple Knot fringe.

Included with the pattern are instructions for materials, knitting, cabling and fringe, as well as photographs.

Celtic Aran Afghan by Sharondipity Designs

Project Overview

The Celtic Aran Afghan is a knitted blanket and throw designed by Sharondipity Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project was inspired by the designer's travel to Ireland and combines traditional Celtic motifs with classic Aran knitting techniques. The finished afghan serves as both a functional home accessory and a meaningful keepsake that captures memories of a special journey.

Construction Method

This afghan is constructed using a panel-based approach, with the blanket made up of 5 separate panels that are knitted individually and then seamed together. This modular construction method makes the project more manageable and portable, allowing knitters to work on one panel at a time rather than managing a large piece throughout the entire project.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Celtic Aran Afghan showcases traditional Aran knitting techniques, a style originating from the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. Aran knitting is characterized by intricate textured stitch patterns that create dimensional, cable-like designs across the fabric surface.

  • Cable stitches form the primary decorative elements, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the twisted, rope-like patterns typical of Aran design
  • Celtic motifs are incorporated throughout the pattern, reflecting traditional Irish design aesthetics
  • The textured stitch patterns create depth and visual interest while adding warmth and insulation to the finished blanket

Materials Required

The Celtic Aran Afghan requires the following materials and tools:

  • Knitting Needles: US 9 (5.5 mm) needles for the main fabric
  • Cable Needle: Required for executing the cable stitches that form the pattern's signature texture
  • Yarn: 11 skeins of worsted weight acrylic Aran yarn (Medium 4 weight). Each skein contains 7 oz (198 g) and 364 yards (333 meters), providing approximately 4,004 total yards of yarn
  • Additional Tools: A blunt darning needle for seaming the five panels together, and a crochet hook for adding fringe to the finished edges

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

This pattern uses worsted weight acrylic yarn in the Aran category, which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and structure. The acrylic fiber provides durability, easy care, and affordability while still achieving the traditional Aran look. The yarn weight and needle size combination creates panels measuring 12 inches wide, allowing knitters to plan their finished afghan dimensions accordingly.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Celtic Aran Afghan is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns. The cable work and Aran techniques require familiarity with reading pattern instructions and managing cable stitches, but the panel-based construction helps break the project into manageable sections.

Finishing Details

The pattern includes instructions for seaming the panels together using a blunt darning needle, ensuring secure and neat joins between sections. The addition of fringe created with a crochet hook provides a traditional finishing touch that enhances the afghan's authentic Irish aesthetic.
