Product Description
Celandines is a striking asymmetric shawl which contrasts a simple garter body and twisting cable vine with an elegant textured lace.
The expanding lace edge is bound off in small increments creating a dramatic sawtooth hem which can be adjusted to make the shawl deeper or longer as you prefer. The shawl can be extended to any size, making it a very easy to customise.
The adaptability of the pattern creates flexibility as to yardage, as the shawl can be worked in 400 - 1000m or more of heavy lace to sport weight yarn, or solid, semi-solid, gradient, low-contrast variegated, or perhaps a subtle speckled yarn.
The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.

Celandines Asymmetric Knit Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What is Being Made
Celandines is a striking asymmetric shawl designed by Nim Teasdale. The garment combines an elegant lace pattern with a simple garter stitch body, accented by a twisting cable detail. The shawl features an expanding lace edge that creates a dramatic sawtooth hemline, making it a versatile and visually distinctive accessory piece suitable for advanced knitters.
Design Features and Customization
The shawl is highly adaptable in size and depth. The expanding lace edge is bound off in small increments, with a longer bind off occurring every third repeat. This construction method allows knitters to customize the shawl's final appearance and dimensions. For a deeper shawl, knitters can substitute a 2-stitch bind off in place of the standard 8-stitch bind off. For a longer shawl, the pattern allows for alternating between 2 and 8-stitch bind offs. The shawl can be extended to any desired size, providing significant flexibility in the finished garment.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Celandines employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for advanced-level crafters:
- Lace knitting: An elegant lace pattern forms the expanding edge of the shawl
- Garter stitch: A simple garter stitch body provides structure and contrast to the lace detailing
- Cable knitting: A twisting cable decorates the body of the shawl
- Bind-off variations: The pattern uses incremental bind-off techniques in varying stitch counts to create the distinctive sawtooth hem
Yarn and Needle Requirements
Celandines is designed to work across multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different fiber preferences. The pattern accommodates 3-ply, 4-ply, and sport weight yarns. Yardage requirements are adaptable, ranging from approximately 400 meters to 1000 meters or more (440 to 1100 yards or more), depending on the desired finished size and yarn weight selected.
The pictured shawl shown in the pattern was knitted using 640 meters (770 yards) of Crave Yarn Linea on 3.5mm (US size 4) needles. Gauge and needle size will vary based on the yarn weight chosen, allowing knitters to adjust their needle selection to achieve proper gauge with their selected yarn.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated for advanced knitters. The combination of lace work, cable techniques, and the customizable bind-off construction requires solid foundational knitting skills and experience with more complex stitch patterns.
