Project Overview

The Ceildh Wrap is a warm yet elegant shawl designed by WJ Paterson and created by NOVA SCOTIA KNITS. This advanced knitting project combines traditional Scottish knotwork aesthetics with a modern, edgy finished design. The wrap is worked in the round from the bottom up and features a cut steek technique that transforms the circular knit into a flat textile suitable for wearing as a wrap.

Construction Method and Technique

This design employs stranded knitting, also known as fair isle or colorwork knitting, as its primary technique. The wrap is worked in the round, which means stitches are knitted continuously in a circular fashion rather than working back and forth in rows. The construction begins at the bottom and progresses upward.

A cut steek is used to open the circular knit into a flat wrap. This advanced technique involves cutting through the knitted fabric along a designated line, which is then secured to prevent unraveling. This method allows the designer to create a seamless colorwork pattern while ultimately producing a wearable flat garment.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The Ceildh Wrap features knit stitch only throughout the entire project—no purl stitches are used. This simplification makes the pattern very easy to execute despite its advanced difficulty rating. The bold knotwork design creates the visual interest and striking textile appearance.

The stranded colorwork incorporates a main knotwork chart with traditional Scottish design elements. Crafters should be aware that some sections of the knotwork chart contain floats longer than 6 stitches. To manage these longer floats and prevent them from becoming caught during wear, the technique of wrapping the two colors of yarn around each other is recommended to catch and secure them.

For optimal results when working this stranded colorwork piece, knitters are advised to work with the floats on the outside of the fabric. This positioning ensures that floats maintain correct tension and that the overall knitting appears smooth without lumps or irregularities that can occur when floats are worked on the inside.

Materials
