Caterpillar Scarf by Rian Anderson

What Is Being Made

The Caterpillar Scarf is a playful, child-friendly knitted accessory designed by Rian Anderson that wraps around the neck like a traditional scarf while resembling a cute caterpillar. Measuring approximately 80 centimeters long from head to tail and 13 centimeters wide at the body's middle, this scarf is suitable for both children and adults. The design features a distinct caterpillar head with sew-on joggle eyes and a segmented body that creates the illusion of the insect's characteristic form.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques to achieve its caterpillar shape. The pattern uses garter stitch (knitting every row) as the primary stitch throughout the project, creating a textured, reversible fabric. Increasing stitches (using the kfb or "knit front and back" method) is used to expand the width of the scarf at strategic points, building the body segments. Decreasing stitches is employed to shape the head and create definition between sections. The pattern also incorporates color changes using different yarn colors to distinguish the head, feet, and body segments, with an optional technique allowing crafters to use stash yarn by making each segment a different color. Seaming with a tapestry needle joins sections together, and the head is folded and stitched to create dimension.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch – the foundation stitch created by knitting every row on straight needles, providing texture and structure throughout the scarf
  • Kfb (knit front and back) – an increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to widen the body sections
  • Decreases – used to shape and taper sections of the design
  • Seaming – joining cast-off edges and folded sections using a tapestry needle

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Caterpillar Scarf is worked in 8 ply / DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and durability suitable for children's garments. The pattern calls for approximately 80 grams of yarn total, distributed as follows: red yarn (20 grams) for the head and feet, light green yarn (40 grams) for the primary body segments, and dark green yarn (20 grams) for accent segments. The recommended needle size is 4.5 mm (US 7) for the main body, with 3.75 mm (US 5) or 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles used for smaller details. The pattern specifies a tension or gauge of 18 stitches and 34 rows over a 10-centimeter square when worked in garter stitch on 4.5 mm needles with 8 ply yarn. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming, safety pins for marking placement points, and a pair of 18 millimeter sew-on joggle eyes to create the caterpillar's face.

Pattern Difficulty and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Caterpillar Scarf is accessible to knitters with basic skills who are comfortable with increases, decreases, color changes, and seaming. The straightforward garter stitch construction makes it forgiving for newer knitters, while the shaping techniques provide enough complexity to keep intermediate crafters engaged. The downloadable PDF format allows for easy reference while working.
