Castellaro shawl is light and aerie shawl, perfect for cold summer evening and spring.

The shawl is worked from the center bottom up. Stitches are increased at each side on every other row, to create a slightly rounded triangle shape. I would say that this shawl is a baby between crescent shape and triangle shape shawls. The shawl is finished with I cord bind off.

Materials Yarn: Fingering weight yarn 400 m in 100g. In the sample used Filpucci 73% linen, 27% cotton. Approx. 787 yards, (720 m), 180 g. Needles: US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for the main body of the shawl. US 7 (4.5 mm) needles for I cord bind off. Other notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, blocking pins, or wires.

Gauge 16 sts and 40 rows 4” (10cm) in garter st on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project, but differences will affect your yardage requirements and the finished size.

Castellaro Shawl by Renate Dziedataja

What is Being Made

The Castellaro shawl is a downloadable knitting pattern for an intermediate-level triangular shawl that measures approximately 74 inches (188 cm) from side to side and 24 inches (61 cm) from top to bottom at its deepest point after blocking. This design bridges the aesthetic between a crescent shawl and a traditional triangle shawl, offering a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and styling preferences.

Construction Method

The shawl is worked from the center bottom upward, using a systematic increase pattern that creates the characteristic rounded triangular silhouette. Stitches are increased at each side on every other row, allowing the shawl to expand gradually as you progress from the cast-on edge toward the top. This construction approach provides a meditative knitting experience with a clear visual progression of the expanding fabric.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the shawl is garter stitch, which creates a reversible, textured fabric with excellent drape and elasticity. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it an accessible technique for intermediate knitters while still producing a sophisticated finished garment. The shawl is finished with an I-cord bind off, a decorative edge treatment that adds a refined, professional appearance to the top edge of the shawl.

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including P for purl, BO for bind off, PM for place marker, and CO for cast on. Stitch markers are essential notions for tracking increases and maintaining pattern accuracy throughout construction.

Yarn and Materials

The Castellaro shawl pattern calls for fingering weight yarn totaling approximately 787 yards (720 meters) at 100 grams. The sample shown was created using Filpucci yarn, a high-quality blend of 73% linen and 27% cotton, weighing 180 grams total. This fiber composition creates a lightweight, breathable shawl with excellent drape and a subtle natural sheen characteristic of linen-cotton blends.

Knitting needles required include US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for the main body of the shawl and US 7 (4.5 mm) needles for the I-cord bind off. Additional notions needed are a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and blocking pins or wires for shaping the finished shawl to its intended dimensions.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles after blocking. While gauge is noted as not critical for this project, variations in your personal gauge will affect both the yardage requirements and the finished dimensions of the completed shawl. Blocking is essential to achieving the stated measurements and to fully developing the shawl's intended drape and shape.

Difficulty Level

Designed as an intermediate-level pattern, the Castellaro shawl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects with straightforward but consistent increases and specialty finishing techniques like the I-cord bind off. The garter stitch construction keeps the pattern accessible while the overall size and finishing details provide an engaging knitting project.
