Product Description
This simple garter stitch beanie co ordinates with both my Carrie fingerless mitts or Carrie mitts to make a lovely set. Made in merino wool it's bound to keep heads cosy on chilly day. It's a modern, slightly slouchy style but by adding more rows it can be extra slouchy or remove a few rows for a traditional beanie shape. The choice is yours.
I love a faux fur pom pom but a woolly one looks lovely too. If pom poms are not your thing just leave it off for a simple beanie to ward off the cold.
Carrie Ladies Beanie by Buzybee
What is Being Made
The Carrie Ladies Beanie is a classic knitted hat designed to fit an average ladies head. This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Buzybee creates a cozy, finished beanie topped with a decorative pom pom, suitable for everyday wear and gift-giving.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques that are accessible to those new to the craft. The construction begins with a ribbed cuff worked in the round using a two-needle flat method, then transitions to stockinette-style construction. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques to shape the crown of the beanie, using knit two together (k2tog) reductions worked strategically across rows. The top is finished by threading remaining stitches onto yarn and pulling tight to close the crown. Assembly involves mattress stitch, a professional seaming method that creates an invisible vertical seam along the back of the hat.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch (G st): Created by knitting every row, this textured stitch forms the main body of the beanie and provides warmth and structure
- 2 x 2 Rib: Alternating knit 2 stitches and purl 2 stitches across each row to create the elastic cuff that hugs the head
- Knit Two Together (k2tog): A decrease stitch used repeatedly to shape the crown and reduce stitch count from 130 stitches down to 18 stitches
Materials and Specifications
The Carrie Ladies Beanie requires 100g of DK weight yarn in a single color (referred to as yarn A in the pattern). Two needle sizes are needed: 3.25mm needles for the ribbed cuff and 4mm needles for the main body. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 44 rows to 10cm when worked in garter stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size. For the finishing touch, the pattern calls for either a faux fur pom pom or materials to make a yarn pom pom using a pom pom maker.
Pattern Structure
The beanie is constructed in three main sections. First, 130 stitches are cast on using the 3.25mm needles and worked for 16 rows in 2 x 2 rib to create the fitted cuff. The needles are then changed to 4mm and 72 rows of garter stitch form the body. Finally, the crown is shaped through three rounds of strategic decreasing, reducing the stitch count progressively before the remaining stitches are secured and the seam is sewn closed with mattress stitch.
