Product Description
Caroline’s cape is one piece cowl and cape which is worked in the round. The pattern is adjustable in size. The width can be easily adjusted by adding the number of cast on stitches in multiple of 8 stitches, while the length can be adjusted by adding more knit rounds between lace increase rounds (between rounds 39 – 44, 44 – 49, and so on).
Special thanks to a good friend, Caroline, who give me the inspiration to design this pattern. Happy to have her name for this pattern
Caroline's Cape by Arina Shofiya
What is Being Made
Caroline's Cape is a one-piece knitted cape that combines a fitted cowl neckline with a dramatically flared silhouette. This garment features a top-down construction, beginning at the neck with a circumference of 27.56 inches (70 cm) and expanding to a generous bottom circumference of 63 inches (160 cm). The total top-down length measures 19.68 inches (50 cm), creating an elegant, flowing cape suitable for layering over other garments. The design is adjustable, allowing crafters to customize both width and length to their preferences.
Techniques and Construction
This cape is worked in the round using a seamless, top-down construction method. The pattern employs lace increases to achieve the dramatic flare from the fitted cowl to the wider cape body. The adjustable nature of the pattern allows knitters to modify the width by adding cast-on stitches in multiples of 8, and to extend the length by incorporating additional knit rounds between lace increase sections. This construction approach ensures a professional finish without seaming and provides flexibility for custom sizing.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure features stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base. Lace stitches are incorporated throughout the pattern to create the shaping increases that transform the cape from its narrow neckline to its wide hem. The combination of stockinette and lace elements adds visual interest while maintaining the garment's elegant drape.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Caroline's Cape requires approximately 656.16 yards (600 meters) of light fingering weight yarn, totaling 4.23 ounces (120 grams). The sample shown was created using Rayon Cotton by IRA FIBER STUDIO, which provides 546.8 yards per 500 meters per 3.52 ounces (100 grams) per skein. This yarn blend offers a luxurious drape and breathable quality ideal for a cape garment. Knitters will need a US 6/4mm circular needle to work this pattern. Essential notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Blocking
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Proper blocking is essential for accurate measurements, as certain fiber types—particularly rayon blends—may grow or shrink significantly during the blocking process. Crafters are strongly encouraged to block their gauge swatch to ensure their finished cape meets the intended dimensions.
Skill Level
While the product attributes indicate a beginner difficulty level, the pattern itself is marked as Intermediate. This reflects the skills required to work lace stitches, manage increases in the round, and maintain consistent gauge throughout the garment. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques and lace pattern reading before beginning this project.
