Product Description
Born out of a brutally cold and blustery English winter, this hat was designed to be your perfect defence against the chill. Knitted in a super-soft chunky yarn, it features a classic 1x1 rib with a generous turn-back brim that keeps ears warm and protected from biting winds. With its naturally flexible fit, it can be worn snug against the head for extra warmth or slightly relaxed to showcase the beautiful spiral detail on the crown.
The hat comes in 2 versions, Hat A with a striped turn back and Hat B with a wide strip at the crown.

What is Being Made
The Carey Beanie is a knitted hat designed for cold-weather protection, inspired by harsh English winter conditions. This downloadable PDF pattern offers two distinct design variations: Hat A features a striped turn-back brim, while Hat B showcases a wide strip detail at the crown. The beanie is available in four sizes—Petite, Small, Medium, and Large—with head circumferences ranging from 52cm to 60cm (20.5 to 23.5 inches). The finished hat length with turn-back measures between 20cm and 22.5cm (8 to 8.75 inches), with total length reaching 26.5cm to 29cm (10.5 to 11.5 inches).
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This beginner-friendly beanie employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters new to hat construction. The primary structural element is a 1x1 rib stitch, which creates vertical columns of alternating knit and purl stitches. This ribbed construction provides natural elasticity and flexibility, allowing the hat to be worn either snug against the head for maximum warmth or slightly relaxed to display the decorative spiral detail that forms on the crown. The design features a generous turn-back brim, a folded edge that doubles over to provide extra insulation and ear protection against wind. The spiral detail on the crown adds visual interest while maintaining the straightforward construction process appropriate for beginner knitters.
Yarn and Materials
The Carey Beanie is knitted using Berroco 'Vintage Chunky' yarn, a chunky-weight fiber that works up quickly and provides substantial warmth. This yarn blend consists of 50% Acrylic, 40% Wool, and 10% Nylon, combining the softness and temperature-regulating properties of wool with the durability and easy-care characteristics of acrylic. Each 100g ball yields 120 meters or 130 yards of yarn. Hat A requires one ball of the main color (MC 6107 'Cracked Pepper') plus additional contrast colors including CC1 6124 'Kiwi' for the striped turn-back detail. The chunky yarn weight means this project works up efficiently, making it an ideal choice for beginners seeking quick results.
Difficulty Level
Rated as Easy, the Carey Beanie is an excellent beginner knitting project. The straightforward 1x1 rib stitch requires only basic knitting knowledge, and the chunky yarn makes stitches easy to see and manipulate. The simple construction process combined with the forgiving nature of ribbed fabric makes this pattern accessible to knitters developing their foundational skills.
