Carbis Beach Bag by CamexiaDesigns
What Is Being Made
The Carbis Beach Bag is a beginner-friendly knit bag pattern designed for both beach and urban use. This versatile accessory combines functionality with an easy construction method, making it an ideal project for knitters new to bag-making. The finished bag is available in three sizes: Small (30cm/12" wide x 44cm/17" tall), Medium (40cm/15" wide x 56cm/22" tall), and Large (48cm/18" wide x 56cm/22" tall), with measurements excluding the strap. The design is perfect for summer outings or everyday carry, offering a practical solution for those seeking a lightweight, water-resistant accessory.
Construction Technique
This knit bag pattern employs a straightforward construction method that makes it accessible to beginners. The bag is shaped from a very simple rectangle that is folded and seamed together to form the final three-dimensional shape. This approach eliminates the complexity of shaping through increases and decreases, allowing knitters to focus on maintaining consistent tension and stitch quality. Once the rectangular piece is complete, it is folded strategically and seamed using either a crochet hook or tapestry needle, transforming a flat rectangle into a structured tote bag with defined sides and bottom.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Carbis Beach Bag utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for a beginner skill level. The pattern incorporates the following abbreviations and techniques:
- CO (cast on) – the foundation method for creating initial stitches
- k (knit) – the primary stitch used throughout the pattern
- p (purl) – used to create texture variation in the pattern stitch
- k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) – a basic decrease technique
- yo (yarn over) – creates decorative eyelet holes in the fabric
- st(s) (stitch/stitches) – the individual loops that form the knitted fabric
- ** (repeat instructions between asterisks) – indicates sections of the pattern that are worked multiple times
The pattern stitch is worked to a gauge of 10 stitches and 10 rows equaling 10cm (4 inches), which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Materials and Tools
The Carbis Beach Bag pattern calls for specific materials and equipment to complete the project successfully. Knitters will need knitting needles in sizes 5-6mm, which are appropriate for working with chunky weight yarn. The pattern requires 300-400 yards of chunky weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends raffia yarn for its exceptional qualities: it is notably light in weight, naturally water-repellent, and quick to dry—making it ideal for a beach bag that will be exposed to moisture and sun. However, the pattern is flexible, and any other chunky weight yarn can be substituted if a different aesthetic or fiber content is preferred for an urban bag version.
Additional materials include a button measuring 4cm (1.5 inches) in diameter for closure, and either a crochet hook or tapestry needle for seaming the folded rectangle together and finishing the bag construction.
Skill Level and Project Suitability
Rated as an easy beginner project, the Carbis Beach Bag is designed to be a rewarding knit that delivers a finished, functional item ready for immediate use. The straightforward rectangular construction combined with basic knitting stitches makes this pattern an excellent choice for knitters building their skills and confidence. Upon completion, crafters will have created a practical beach or urban accessory that demonstrates fundamental knitting techniques while producing a wearable, gift-worthy result.
