Cape Otway Mitts by Tracey Lee
What is Being Made
Cape Otway Mitts are a pair of hand-fitted mittens inspired by the dramatic coastal landscape where the Southern Ocean meets Bass Strait at Cape Otway, Victoria. These mittens feature decorative lace elements combined with practical everyday wear construction, designed to showcase beautiful hand-dyed yarn in the Bass Strait colorway. The mittens include a comfortable thumb gusset for an improved fit and are available in multiple sizes to suit different hand circumferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates several essential techniques that build upon fundamental knitting skills. The pattern employs lace knitting for the cuff and finger sections, which requires careful attention to yarn overs and decreases to create the openwork design. A thumb gusset is integrated into the hand section using simple yarn over increases, allowing for a customized fit around the thumb base. The pattern notes that knitters may substitute their preferred increase method if desired. The main hand and thumb sections are worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic fabric base that contrasts beautifully with the lace details. The project is worked in the round, requiring circular needles or double-pointed needles depending on knitter preference.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the stockinette stitch base
- Purl (P) – used in combination with knit stitches for textural variation
- Yarn Over (YO) – creates the openwork lace pattern and serves as an increase method in the thumb gusset
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used to shape the lace and structure
- Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK) – a left-leaning decrease created by slipping one stitch knitwise, returning it to the left needle, and knitting it together with the next stitch through the back loop
- Stockinette Stitch – alternating knit and purl rows (or rounds) creating a smooth, V-textured fabric for the hand and thumb sections
Bind Off and Finishing
The pattern recommends using a stretchy bind off method to ensure the finished edge maintains elasticity and comfort. Suitable options include a sewn bind off for maximum stretch, working the regular bind off with a needle one size larger than the working needles, or a simple crochet bind off. These finishing techniques prevent the cuff and openings from becoming too tight when wearing the mittens.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Cape Otway Mitts are designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and breathability suitable for hand-wear. The pattern was inspired by hand-dyed yarn in the Bass Strait colorway, making it an excellent choice for showcasing variegated or semi-solid hand-painted yarns. Knitters will require circular needles or double-pointed needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, sized according to the desired gauge. The project is available in a medium size with a 16.5cm (6.5 inch) hand circumference and 20cm (8 inch) length, with additional sizes achievable by working at different gauges with the same pattern instructions.
Sizing and Gauge
This downloadable PDF pattern accommodates multiple sizes through gauge adjustment rather than separate written instructions. By working the pattern at a different gauge, knitters can achieve various hand circumferences and lengths to suit their individual measurements. The medium size specifications provide a reference point for customization.
