Product Description

This scarf is an extra long scarf so it can be worn in multiple styles. It measures in a little over 6 feet long and about half a foot wide.

The cables make it very thick and super warm.

It works up quickly once you get the hang of the stitch.

There is a video tutorial to help you figure out the stitch linked in both the blog post and the pdf.

I rate this pattern as easy. The cables may look intimidating but once you figure them out, you'll see exactly what I mean!

This pattern offers a free and paid version. The free version is available on my blog where I earn revenue from ads. The paid version is ad free, can be added to your Ravelry library and you'll never lose it if I decide to retire the pattern!

Candy Cane Cables Scarf by Amanda Evanson

Project Overview

The Candy Cane Cables Scarf is an intermediate-level crochet design that creates a striking striped accessory featuring dimensional cable textures. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Amanda Evanson combines color blocking with textured stitchwork to produce a scarf with visual depth and a festive candy cane-inspired aesthetic through its strategic color arrangement.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crochet scarf featuring prominent cable motifs arranged in alternating color sections. The design uses a repeating cable structure that increases in width throughout the scarf, creating a symmetrical composition that mirrors itself from the center outward. The color arrangement follows a specific progression: main color (MC) sections alternate with contrasting color (CC) sections, with cable counts increasing and then decreasing to form the characteristic candy cane visual effect.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Candy Cane Cables Scarf employs post-based crochet techniques that create raised, dimensional textures. The primary technique involves working stitches around the post of previous rows rather than into the top loops, which produces the characteristic cable appearance. This method allows stitches to sit prominently on the fabric surface, creating visual and tactile interest. The pattern also incorporates color changes to enhance the dimensional effect of the cables.

Special Stitches

  • Braid (BR): A decorative cable stitch created by skipping one stitch, working front post triple crochet stitches in the next two stitches, then working a front post triple crochet in the skipped stitch. This creates an interwoven, braided appearance.
  • Front Post Triple Crochet (fptrc): A post stitch worked by yarning over twice and inserting the hook around the post of a specified stitch from the front of the work. This creates a raised stitch that sits prominently on the fabric surface.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for Red Heart Super Saver yarn, a durable, budget-friendly acrylic option available in a wide range of colors suitable for creating the main color and contrasting color sections. A Hook I is used to work the stitches. The pattern specifies a gauge of 2 rows and 3 stitches per 1 inch, which helps ensure the scarf achieves the intended finished dimensions and drape.

Pattern Structure and Color Work

The scarf features a carefully planned color sequence that creates its candy cane effect. The pattern alternates between main color cable sections and contrasting color cable sections, with the number of cables in each section increasing progressively through the first half of the scarf, then decreasing symmetrically through the second half. This creates a balanced, mirror-image composition. The specific color arrangement is: MC 6 cables, CC 3 cables, MC 8 cables, CC 4 cables, MC 10 cables, CC 5 cables, MC 12 cables, CC 6 cables, MC 14 cables, CC 6 cables, then reversing the sequence back to MC 6 cables.

Skill Level

Classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, the Candy Cane Cables Scarf requires familiarity with basic crochet fundamentals and comfort working with post stitches. The braided cable stitch and front post triple crochet techniques add complexity beyond beginner-level work, making this pattern suitable for crocheters with some experience. The pattern includes a reference to a video tutorial for the braided cable stitch technique to support learning.
