Product Description

A crescent shaped shawl design worked from top down. The design begins with a garter tab cast on and contains a top edge made of Garter stitch. The main body of the shawl is knitted using a stunning lace pattern that resembles leaves that fall from the trees in the Autumn months. The bottom edge of the shawl is knitted directly to the body and is in the shape of leaves.

Needle: US 3 (3.25 mm), 32” (80cm) circular needle. Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. Yarn Used: Wandering Wool (Rock Creek Sock; 100% Superwash Merino; 400yds/365.76m; 4oz/100g; Colorway Cranberry Bog). Yardage: Approx. 850-900yds/777-823m. Gauge: 28 sts per 4”/10cm. Gauge is not crucial to this project, but will affect the size and the amount of yarn used. Final Measurements: Please note that measurements will vary based on the gauge, yarn used, and how aggressively the shawl is blocked.

Pattern includes charts, schematics, and a row count table.

What Is Being Made

The Caleen (Leaf) Crescent Shawl is a crescent-shaped knitted shawl designed by Kristina Smiley. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked from the top down, beginning with a garter tab cast on and progressing through multiple stitch patterns to create an elegant, leaf-themed accessory. The finished shawl showcases decorative leaf motifs throughout its construction, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to expand their stitch pattern repertoire.

Construction and Techniques

The shawl employs a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the piece as it grows and adjust the final size by binding off at any desired width. This approach is particularly useful for shawl patterns where customization is desired. The design utilizes a circular needle to accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl expands from the top edge downward. A garter tab cast on begins the project, providing a secure and decorative foundation for the subsequent stitch patterns.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch — forms the top edge of the shawl, providing a classic, textured border that frames the main design
  • Falling Leaves Stitch Pattern — comprises the main body of the shawl, creating the primary visual interest and leaf-inspired motifs
  • Leaf Edging Stitch — finishes the bottom edge, extending the leaf theme and creating a decorative, shaped border

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern features Wandering Wool Rock Creek Sock yarn in the Cranberry Bog colorway. This yarn is composed of 100% Superwash Merino, a durable and easy-care fiber ideal for shawls. The yarn weight is 4-ply, and the skein provides 400 yards (365.76 meters) per 4 ounces (100 grams).

Needles: A US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 centimeters) is required. The circular needle format is essential for managing the expanding stitch count as the shawl grows.

Yardage and Gauge: The project requires approximately 570 to 650 yards (520 to 600 meters) of yarn. The recommended gauge is 28 stitches per 4 inches (10 centimeters). While gauge is not considered crucial to this particular design, variations in gauge will affect both the final dimensions of the shawl and the total yardage consumed during knitting.

Finished Dimensions

Final measurements will vary based on individual gauge, the specific yarn selected, and the intensity of blocking applied to the finished piece. Blocking plays a significant role in shaping the crescent form and defining the leaf stitch patterns, so the final appearance is customizable based on the knitter's preferences and techniques.
