Cable Brim Hat by Agnese
What is Being Made
The Cable Brim Hat is a slightly slouchy beanie featuring a distinctive cable knit brim. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a hat with a unique aesthetic that combines a textured cable panel with classic stockinette stitch construction. The design allows for creative customization by knitting the cable brim section in a contrasting yarn color for enhanced visual interest.
Construction and Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs a mixed construction method that combines flat and circular knitting techniques. The cable brim portion is knit flat, allowing for precise cable stitch work before the remaining hat sections are seamlessly transitioned to circular knitting. This hybrid approach creates a structured, decorative brim while maintaining the efficiency of in-the-round construction for the body of the hat.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – Forms the primary fabric of the hat body, creating a smooth, classic knit texture
- Cable Stitches – Featured prominently in the brim section, these twisted stitches create the signature dimensional pattern
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern uses worsted weight yarn, with yardage requirements scaling across multiple sizes. The smallest size requires approximately 50 grams (roughly 125 yards), while the largest size needs up to 130 grams of yarn. The pattern provides specific yarn and needle recommendations to achieve proper gauge.
Recommended Yarn Options:
- LANA GROSSA Merino Uno (100% Merino Superwash Wool, 50g per 125 meters) paired with 5mm (US 8) knitting needles
- ARTYARNS Luxe Merino (100% Merino Superwash Wool, 100g per 164 meters) paired with 5.5mm (US 9) knitting needles
- SCHEEPJES Merino Soft Brush (50% Merino Superwash Wool, 50% Microfiber, 50g per 105 meters)
Tools and Notions
Beyond yarn and needles, this project requires the following additional tools:
- Knitting needles sized to achieve the specified gauge for circular knitting
- One stitch marker for tracking round progression
- Cabling needle for manipulating cable stitches
- Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
Gauge Information
The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) measured in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished hat dimensions and ensuring the cable brim displays at its intended scale.
