Product Description
This is a corner to corner crochet version of my Holy Blue Butterfly chart, this version includes a c2c picture chart and a colour-coded written version for those who prefer to follow worded instructions. I have also included a "how to corner to corner crochet" guide for those who might not have crocheted an image. The guide also has a border option for those who may want to add a decorative edge to their finished blanket.
The finished blanket will be a different size depending on the yarn you use (using 4ply gives you a lovely baby blanket size)

C2C Holy Blue Butterfly Corner to Corner Blanket
Project Overview
The Holy Blue Butterfly is an intermediate-level crochet blanket pattern designed using the corner-to-corner (C2C) technique. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Instarsia features a striking butterfly motif worked in an 82x82 stitch grid, creating a finished blanket suitable for both decorative display and functional use.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a square crochet blanket showcasing a detailed butterfly design. The finished piece measures approximately 82 stitches by 82 rows when worked according to the C2C chart provided. The blanket combines a central butterfly focal point with a coordinating background, making it an eye-catching home textile project.
Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Technique
Corner-to-corner crochet is a popular method for creating graphical, pixel-based designs in blankets and afghans. This technique involves starting at one corner of the project and working diagonally across in small blocks, typically using double crochet stitches. The C2C method allows crafters to follow a chart grid precisely, making it ideal for creating intricate color patterns and images like the butterfly design in this pattern. The technique builds the blanket incrementally from corner to corner, with each "block" on the chart representing a small cluster of stitches.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for C2C work. Double crochet stitches form the primary building blocks of this technique, worked in small repeating units that correspond to the chart squares. The structured nature of C2C crochet creates a fabric with clear stitch definition, allowing the color changes to create a crisp, pixelated representation of the butterfly design.
Color Chart and Design
The pattern includes a detailed picture chart with an 82x82 grid layout. The design uses four distinct colors to bring the butterfly to life:
- Meadow (545 stitches) – Primary background color
- White (206 stitches) – Secondary color for contrast
- Black (340 stitches) – Used for definition and detail work
- Denim (625 stitches) – The dominant color, likely featuring the butterfly itself
The numbered grid (1-82 on both axes) provides clear reference points for following the pattern accurately throughout the project.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight option that creates a fabric with good drape and structure. DK yarn works beautifully with the C2C technique, producing a blanket with balanced stitch definition and appropriate density. Crafters will need a crochet hook sized appropriately for DK yarn (typically a 3.5-4mm hook, though specific recommendations should be verified with the full pattern instructions). Four colors of DK yarn are required in the quantities indicated by the stitch counts in the chart.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to read and follow a chart. While C2C crochet itself is relatively straightforward once the technique is understood, managing four colors and maintaining accuracy across an 82x82 grid requires attention to detail and some crochet experience. Crafters new to C2C may benefit from practicing the technique on a smaller project first.
Pattern Versatility
The Instarsia chart system is designed to be adaptable across multiple fiber crafts. While this pattern is specifically formatted for corner-to-corner crochet, the same chart can be used for knitting projects or traditional crochet methods, offering flexibility for crafters with different skill sets and preferences.
