Product Description
This is a corner to corner crochet version of my Blue Whale chart, this version includes a c2c picture chart and a colour-coded written version for those who prefer to follow worded instructions. I have also included a "how to corner to corner crochet" guide for those who might not have crocheted an image. The guide also has a border option for those who may want to add a decorative edge to their finished blanket.
The finished blanket will be a different size depending on the yarn you use (using 4ply gives you a lovely baby blanket size)
Sizes - 4ply: 60x70cm, DK: 80x90 cm, Aran: 90x100cm, Chunky: 100x110cm
C2C Blue Whale Corner to Corner Blanket
Project Overview
This is a corner to corner (C2C) crochet blanket featuring a charming blue whale design. The project is created by designer EJHeywood from Instarsia and is classified as an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for crocheters with some foundational experience who are ready to tackle color-work techniques.
What Is Being Made
The finished piece is a decorative blanket or throw that showcases a pictorial whale motif. The design incorporates a blue whale as the focal point, set against contrasting background colors including cloud, black, white, and denim tones. This type of project is ideal for creating a statement piece for a nursery, bedroom, or living space, or as a thoughtful handmade gift.
Crochet Technique: Corner to Corner (C2C)
The corner to corner technique is a popular crochet method that builds fabric diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. This approach offers several advantages: it creates a sturdy, structured fabric with minimal seaming, allows for easy color changes to create pixel-art style designs, and produces a naturally squared-off finished piece. The C2C method is particularly well-suited for graphical designs like this whale illustration, as the technique naturally translates picture charts into crochet fabric.
Stitches and Construction
Corner to corner crochet primarily uses double crochet stitches worked in a specific pattern that builds the fabric diagonally. The technique involves increasing stitches on one end while decreasing on the other, creating the diagonal growth pattern. Color changes are incorporated by switching yarn colors at strategic points to follow the provided picture chart, allowing the whale design to emerge as the blanket grows.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn Weight: DK (double knit) weight yarn, which is a lightweight option that creates a drape-friendly finished blanket
- Color Requirements: Multiple colors including cloud, black, white, and denim to complete the design
- Yardage: The pattern indicates approximately 1145 yards total, with 120 yards in one color and 51 yards in another (additional yardage requirements for remaining colors are referenced in the full pattern)
- Finished Size: The chart shows an 82 x 82 stitch grid, creating a substantial blanket suitable for various uses
- Tools: An appropriate crochet hook sized for DK weight yarn (typically a 3.5-4mm hook, though specific hook size should be confirmed with the complete pattern)
Pattern Format and Design Source
This is a downloadable PDF pattern provided by independent designer Instarsia. The pattern includes a detailed picture chart that serves as a visual guide for color placement throughout the project. The chart uses a grid system numbered from 1 to 82 in both directions, making it easy to track progress row by row. According to the designer, Instarsia charts are interchangeable and versatile—they can be used not only for corner to corner crochet but also adapted for knitting or other crochet techniques, offering flexibility for crafters with different skill sets.
Skill Level Considerations
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project assumes the crocheter is comfortable with basic stitches and can follow a chart. The main challenge involves managing multiple color changes while maintaining consistent tension and stitch count. The corner to corner technique itself has a learning curve, but once the method is understood, the repetitive nature becomes meditative and rhythmic. First-time C2C crocheters may want to practice with a smaller project before committing to an 82 x 82 stitch blanket.
