Product Description
C+K is when Crochet meets Knitting in a project that combines the beauty and simplicity of both crafts. Knitted garter stitch blanket and bonnet are finished with crochet edgings to make a lovely baby set.
Blanket size 30”x30”, bonnet size 0-3 months.
This set comes together very quickly, made in a worsted weight yarn. I have used 5 balls of Knit Picks Dishie for the sample, and highly recommend using this soft cotton yarn. It is very affordable, easy to care for, and is perfect for a baby gift.
Construction: The blanket is knitted diagonally, from corner to corner. Crochet border is worked in the round. Bonnet is knitted flat, and seamed in the back. Crochet border and edging is made in the round. Cord ties are made using crochet cord technique.
This is a beginner-friendly pattern, that uses only basic knitting and crochet stitches.

Project Overview
The C+K Baby Set is a beginner-friendly knitting and crochet project designed for newborns through three months old. This coordinated set includes a 30" x 30" square blanket and a matching bonnet, both crafted using worsted weight yarn in a soft cotton blend. The set combines fundamental knitting techniques with basic crochet finishing, making it an ideal project for crafters new to fiber arts who want to create practical, heirloom-quality baby items.
Blanket Construction
Technique and Stitch Work: The blanket is constructed using the corner-to-corner method, a popular approach for creating square blankets with minimal shaping. The center is worked entirely in garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This classic stitch produces a reversible fabric with distinct horizontal ridges and offers excellent drape and softness ideal for baby blankets.
The blanket begins with a small cast-on of just 3 stitches. Rows are then increased using yarn overs and knit stitches, creating a diagonal expansion across the blanket. The pattern requires 164 total increase rows, which generate approximately 82 garter ridges—the characteristic bumpy texture of garter stitch. Once the blanket reaches its maximum width, decreases are worked symmetrically using knit two together decreases combined with yarn overs, gradually reducing the stitch count back to 3 stitches to complete the square shape.
Crochet Border: After the knitted center is complete, a crochet border is added around the entire perimeter of the blanket, worked in the round. This border frames the garter stitch center and adds a finished, polished edge to the project.
Bonnet Construction
Knitting and Assembly: The bonnet is knitted flat in pieces and then seamed together at the back. This construction method allows for straightforward shaping and sizing appropriate for newborn to three-month-old infants. The flat knitting approach makes it accessible for beginners who may not yet be comfortable with circular knitting or more complex shaping techniques.
Finishing Details: Once the bonnet pieces are seamed, a crochet border and edging are worked around the entire bonnet opening and perimeter. To complete the bonnet, crochet cord ties are created and attached, allowing the bonnet to be securely fastened under the baby's chin.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn totaling 950 yards (5 balls of 190 yards each). The pattern specifically calls for Knit Picks Dishie in the color Blush, a 100% cotton yarn that is soft, breathable, and easy to care for—ideal properties for baby garments.
- Needles and Hooks: US size 4 (3.50 mm) circular needle with a 20-inch cord or larger for the blanket, and a size H crochet hook for the borders, edging, and cord ties.
- Additional Supplies: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, tape measure for checking dimensions and gauge, and scissors.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches by 36 rows equaling 4 inches by 4 inches when worked in garter stitch. The finished blanket measures 30 inches square, providing ample coverage for a newborn or young infant. The bonnet is sized for babies aged 0 to 3 months, ensuring a proper fit during this critical early period.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the C+K Baby Set requires only fundamental knitting and crochet skills. Crafters need to be comfortable with basic cast-on methods, knit stitches, yarn overs, decreases (knit two together), and simple crochet techniques. The corner-to-corner construction of the blanket is particularly forgiving, as the symmetrical increase and decrease pattern is straightforward to follow and self-correcting in many cases. This makes the set an excellent choice for someone developing their fiber arts skills while creating meaningful gifts or keepsakes.
