What is Being Made

The Bubblicious Hat is a quick-knit hat designed for newborns, babies, toddlers, and children. This downloadable knitting pattern offers four size options with finished circumferences ranging from 12 inches (30.5 cm) for newborns to 18 inches (45.5 cm) for children. The hat is characterized by its playful, eye-catching colorwork design, making it an ideal project for creating distinctive headwear for young children.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs two distinct colorwork techniques to create visual interest. The bottom section of the hat features a slipped-stitch colorwork pattern, which creates texture and color variation by selectively slipping stitches rather than knitting them in the traditional manner. The top portion transitions to stranded colorwork technique, also known as Fair Isle knitting, where multiple yarn colors are carried across rows to create the decreasing crown shaping. This combination of techniques allows for creative color play while maintaining structural integrity as the hat narrows toward the top.

Stitches and Construction

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork methods. The slipped-stitch section at the hat's base creates a textured foundation, while the stranded colorwork in the crown requires managing multiple colors simultaneously. The top of the hat is finished with decreases worked in the stranded colorwork pattern, gradually reducing stitches to close the crown.

• Yarn: Malabrigo Yarn Merino Worsted (100% merino; 210 yards per 100g skein). Yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 60 yards (55 meters) for newborn size up to 95 yards (85 meters) for the child size in Color A (Azul Profundo), plus 15 to 30 yards (14 to 28 meters) in Color B (Lettuce)
• Needles: US #8 (5.0 mm) double-pointed needles, with the recommendation to check gauge and adjust needle sizes as needed
