Product Description
This amigurumi bubble tea is a short, chubby version of the plastic cup boba comes in, with a short straw in a complementary color. One of my favorite things about boba is that the straw is oversized to account for the large tapioca pearls and they always come in fun colors. I love picking my straw to match whatever my boba order happens to be that day! This design is a short round cylinder without any tapering to maximize the chubby effect. The straw is also fairly short to match, and there’s a white cap to mimic the plastic film covering the top of the boba drink.
Bubble Tea Amigurumi Crochet Pattern by Julia Chiang
What Is Being Made
The Bubble Tea pattern is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Julia Chiang. This beginner-friendly crochet project creates a small, stuffed fabric representation of a bubble tea drink, complete with dimensional details. The finished piece is suitable for display, play, or gifting, and makers are welcome to sell finished products in small quantities with proper pattern credit.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques appropriate for beginners. The design uses the foundation single crochet method to establish the base of the project, which provides a clean, structured starting edge. Working in the round is a core technique, allowing the crocheter to build three-dimensional forms. The pattern incorporates increases and decreases to shape the bubble tea cup and create proper proportions for the finished toy.
Crochet Stitches
- Single Crochet (Sc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building the main structure
- Half Double Crochet (Hdc) – Used for specific shaping and texture elements
- Double Crochet (Dc) – Incorporated for dimensional details and accent areas
- Chain (Ch) – Foundation and connecting stitch
- Slip Stitch (Sl st) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) – Alternative base-building technique for structured edges
- Increases and Decreases – Essential shaping techniques for forming the cup structure and creating proper amigurumi proportions
- Back Loop Only / Front Loop Only (BLO/FLO) – Selective loop techniques used to create textural details and defined edges
Materials and Tools
Hook: A 2.5mm B/1 crochet hook is specified for this project, providing the appropriate tension for the sport weight yarn.
Yarn: The pattern calls for sport weight yarn in light purple, specifically Schachenmayr Catania in Flieder. Less than one skein is required to complete the project, making this an economical choice for yarn stash usage.
Stuffing and Embellishments: Polyester fiberfill stuffing creates the soft, squishy interior of the amigurumi toy. Safety eyes measuring 4.0mm add facial features and personality to the finished bubble tea design.
Additional Tools: A tapestry needle and scissors are necessary for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the piece. These basic tools are standard equipment in any crocheter's toolkit.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to amigurumi construction. The straightforward stitch combinations and manageable shaping techniques allow new crocheters to build confidence while creating an adorable finished object.
