Product Description
Sweater is worked from left to right. For the armholes part of the row is left unworked and then a chain is worked in the next row to start the next panel. The sleeves are added on after the shoulders are seamed and are worked in the round from the top down as noted above. Ribbing is worked last and is a SC rib.
The pink sweater is worked in homespun. And the Green is made in KenYarn.
Brónach Wrap Cardigan by Katherine Gibbs
What is Being Made
The Brónach Wrap Cardigan is a crocheted wrap-style cardigan designed for babies and small children. This adorable garment features a wrap construction that provides warmth during cold weather. The cardigan was originally created as a gift for newborn nieces and is worked in a side-to-side construction method, making it an efficient and creative approach to garment shaping.
Construction and Techniques
This cardigan is constructed using a side-to-side building method, which means the piece is worked horizontally across the width rather than from top to bottom. This technique allows for interesting shaping possibilities and reduces the number of seams required. The only seams in this design are located at the shoulders, minimizing finishing work and creating a cleaner final garment.
The Brónach Wrap Cardigan is offered in two distinct sleeve variations to accommodate different yarn types and weights:
- Brónach Version: Features sleeves worked in Moss Stitch, matching the body of the sweater for a cohesive, textured appearance throughout
- Síle Version: Features sleeves worked in half double crochet, designed specifically for heavier yarn weights where the traditional DK weight may create excessive fabric density
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern used in this cardigan is Moss Stitch, a foundational crochet texture that creates visual interest and drape. Moss Stitch is worked by alternating single crochet stitches with chain spaces across rows, creating a distinctive brick-like or woven appearance.
Moss Stitch Pattern Instructions:
- Foundation: Chain an even number of stitches
- Row 1: Single crochet in the fourth chain from the hook, then repeat (chain 1, skip 1 chain, single crochet in next chain) across the row
- Row 2: Chain 2, turn, then repeat (single crochet in the next chain space, chain 1) across the row
- Repeat Row 2 to continue the pattern
The Síle version incorporates half double crochet for the sleeves, a taller stitch than single crochet that works well with heavier homespun yarns to prevent the fabric from becoming too dense or stiff.
Materials and Yarn Information
This pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn, though two specific yarn options are provided depending on which version you choose:
Brónach Version Yarn Requirements:
- Main Color (MC): JojodabomsCrafts Homespun DK Yarn, 50g/100 yards
- Contrast Color (CC): Autumn and Indigo Classic DK, 100g/231 yards
Síle Version Yarn Requirements:
- Main Color (MC): KenDyes Yarn Stratus DK, 100g/231 yards
- Contrast Color (CC): Autumn and Indigo Classic DK, 100g/231 yards
The pattern accommodates both traditional DK weight and heavier homespun varieties, allowing crafters to choose based on yarn availability and desired fabric weight. The use of contrast colors adds visual dimension to the finished garment.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience who are comfortable with basic stitches and following pattern instructions. The side-to-side construction and choice between stitch variations provide an engaging project that builds skills without being overly complex.
