Broadgate Tabard by Georgia Farrell

What is Being Made

The Broadgate Tabard is an advanced-level knitted sleeveless garment designed as a slipover. This tabard is tailored to fit bust sizes ranging from 81-91 cm (32-36 in) through to 112-127 cm (44-50 in), offering three size options for a range of body measurements. The design features structured shaping at the front neck and shoulders, creating a refined, fitted silhouette suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Techniques and Construction

This knitting pattern employs advanced construction techniques appropriate for experienced knitters. The garment is worked in pieces, with separate front and back sections that are subsequently assembled. The pattern incorporates strategic shaping through decreasing stitches at the neck edge and shoulders, requiring careful attention to maintaining stitch pattern accuracy while executing these reductions. The front neckline shaping is particularly detailed, involving multiple decrease rows worked at specific intervals to create a refined neckline. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through casting off groups of stitches across several rows, combined with simultaneous decreasing to create a smooth armhole and shoulder line.

Stitches and Pattern Work

The pattern instructions reference working stitches while keeping the pattern correct, indicating that a stitch pattern is maintained throughout the garment construction. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and techniques including right-side (RS) rows, decreasing one stitch at specified edges, and casting off stitches at the beginning of rows. Double-pointed needles are included in the materials list, suggesting ribbing or other circular sections may be incorporated into the design.

Materials

Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Soft DK, a lightweight double-knit weight yarn. The pattern requires 5 x 50gm balls for the smallest size, increasing to 6 x 50gm balls for the two larger sizes, with the photographed sample worked in Mulberry 207.

Needles and Tools: One pair of 4mm (US 6) needles for the main fabric, and a set of 4 double-pointed 4mm (US 6) needles for any ribbed or circular sections of the garment.
