Product Description
Questions about the pattern? Send me a PM here on Ravelry, or email me at woolybearhandknits@yahoo.com. Cap in 2 sizes, with decorative braid on band, brim, puffy top, spiral shaping on crown, and hem. Brim shape is created through geometry, tight gauge and double layers - no cardboard or plastic! Braid is knitted as part of the hat - no turning to pick up stitches.
This cap is named after my Grandmother's Irish side of the family, the Brittons. They emigrated to the United States in the late 1800s. I'm still trying to trace their ancestry and learn about their journey.

Britton Cap by Cheryl Andrews
What is Being Made
The Britton Cap is a structured knitted hat available in two sizes designed to fit adult small/medium and medium/large head circumferences (21" and 22.5" respectively). This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive design with a decorative braid band, shaped brim, and puffy crown with spiral shaping, creating a classic and polished finished hat.
Design Features and Construction
This hat showcases several notable design elements that distinguish it from basic cap patterns. The brim is engineered to hold its shape through geometric shaping, tight gauge tension, and double-layered construction—eliminating the need for interior support materials like cardboard or plastic. The decorative braid is knitted as an integral part of the hat structure, meaning knitters do not need to pick up stitches separately or work the braid as an afterthought. The crown features spiral shaping that creates visual interest and dimensional texture on the top of the hat.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Knitting in the round using circular needles
- Geometric shaping for structured brim construction
- Tight gauge work to achieve shape retention
- Double-layer brim technique for durability and structure
- Spiral shaping on the crown
- Integrated braid knitting as part of main construction
- Decreasing to shape the puffy top
Stitches and Stitch Markers
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the project employs standard knitting stitches suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern utilizes 3 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the crown and body of the hat. A cable needle is included in the materials list, suggesting cable or twisted stitch details may be incorporated into the design.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Britton Cap requires worsted weight wool yarn in quantities of approximately 185 yards for the smaller size and 200 yards for the larger size. The pattern samples were knitted using Cascade 220 Heathers, a 100% wool yarn that provides 220 yards per 100-gram skein. Worsted weight yarn is ideal for creating the structured fabric and defined stitch definition needed for this hat's geometric brim shaping.
Needles and Tools
This pattern requires specific needle sizes and configurations to achieve the correct gauge and construction method. Knitters will need two size 6 circular needles—one measuring 16 inches and one of any length—for working the body and larger sections in the round. Additionally, a set of 5 size 6 double-pointed needles is necessary for the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for circular needles. A cable needle supports any cable or textured stitch work, and 2 optional buttons may be used as decorative embellishments.
Gauge
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 18 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches when knitting in the round with worsted weight yarn on size 6 needles. Achieving this specific gauge is critical for obtaining the correct finished hat dimensions and ensuring the brim holds its shape as designed through the geometric construction method.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Britton Cap is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and basic shaping techniques. The geometric brim construction and spiral crown shaping require attention to pattern instructions and comfort with decreasing, but the integrated braid design eliminates the complexity of picking up stitches, making it accessible to knitters progressing beyond beginner patterns.
