Breezy Cardigan by Hannah Fettig
What is Being Made
The Breezy Cardigan is a stylish, open-front cardigan designed as a contemporary alternative to traditional everyday cardigans. This knitted garment features a relaxed, airy construction that makes it suitable for layering in various seasons. The design emphasizes an open silhouette, offering versatility in styling for both casual and semi-formal occasions.
Design Overview
This intermediate-level knitting pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and was created by designer Hannah Fettig under the Knitbot label. The pattern includes multiple size options to accommodate different measurements, with detailed stitch counts for front panels, back panel, and sleeves across all available sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Breezy Cardigan employs several fundamental knitting techniques suited to intermediate crafters. The construction begins at the top, using circular needles to work the garment in the round before dividing the sleeves from the body. This top-down construction method allows for easy fitting adjustments and eliminates the need for extensive seaming. The pattern includes marker placement for tracking pattern repeats and shaping sections, and incorporates the technique of placing sleeve stitches on scrap yarn for later finishing.
Stitches Used
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout the main fabric of the cardigan
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches for textural variation
- K2, P2 Rib: A classic ribbed stitch pattern used for finishing edges. The rib is worked as a multiple of 4 plus 2 stitches, creating a stretchy, fitted edge on the right side by alternating two knit stitches with two purl stitches, and reversing this pattern on the wrong side
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Breezy Cardigan is designed to be worked in 4-ply lace weight yarn, which creates a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for the open, airy aesthetic of the design. Longer circular needles are specified for the initial cast-on and body construction, allowing the knitter to work comfortably across the increasing stitch counts required for this garment. The pattern accommodates multiple sizes with stitch counts ranging from 78 to 94 stitches for the initial cast-on, expanding to between 298 and 522 stitches after the setup row, depending on the desired finished size.
Pattern Structure
The pattern follows a top-down construction method, beginning with a cast-on worked on longer circular needles. After the setup row, the knitter establishes the front panels, sleeves, and back panel using stitch markers to delineate each section. The garment is worked in the round until the sleeves are divided from the body, at which point the sleeve stitches are placed on scrap yarn for later completion, and the body continues to be worked separately.
Finishing Details
The ribbed edging using the K2, P2 pattern provides a polished, professional finish to the cardigan. This ribbed detail creates elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing, while also framing the open front of the cardigan elegantly.
