Breckle Hat by Shilo Weir
What Is Being Made
The Breckle Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by Shilo Weir. This pattern was adapted from the popular Breckle Cowl, originally published in Knitty Magazine Winter 2019. The hat is available in three sizes: Adult Small, Medium, and Large/Extra Large, with finished circumferences of 17, 18, and 19 inches respectively. The design pairs beautifully with the original Breckle Cowl pattern, and two skeins of yarn are sufficient to create a coordinating hat and cowl set.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Breckle Hat features garter stitch as its base stitch pattern, making it an ideal project for knitters new to hat construction. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row in flat knitting or alternating knit and purl rounds in circular knitting, resulting in a reversible, textured fabric with excellent stretch and recovery. This stitch choice provides both visual interest and practical functionality, as the inherent elasticity of garter stitch ensures a comfortable, secure fit across all three sizes without requiring extensive shaping.
The pattern incorporates two contrasting colors, allowing for creative color work and visual dimension. The construction method uses circular knitting techniques, transitioning from circular needles to double-pointed needles as the crown decreases, a standard approach for seamless hat construction.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Breckle Hat requires approximately 200 yards of worsted weight yarn in total, divided equally between two contrasting colors at roughly 100 yards each. The sample shown uses Malabrigo Rios, a premium yarn composed of 100% Merino wool with 210 yards per 100-gram skein. The specific colors featured are MC (Main Color) in shade 133 Reflecting Pool and CC (Contrasting Color) in shade 618 Liquidambar.
Needle requirements include one US #8/5 mm circular needle in 16-inch/40-centimeter length for the main body of the hat, paired with a set of 4 or 5 US #8/5 mm double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases. Needle size should be selected to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches and 42 rounds per 4 inches in pattern.
Additional Notions and Tools
- 1 stitch marker for tracking round beginnings
- Cable needle (optional, for potential cable or textured stitch variations)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing Information
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 42 rounds equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the pattern stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished circumference and ensuring the hat fits as intended. The three available sizes provide options for different head measurements, with the stretchy nature of garter stitch accommodating minor variations in fit.
