Product Description

Step out of your comfort zone and add some colourwork to your socks. The easiest option is knitting stripes. The next step would be breaking up the stripes by slipping some stitches. These slipped stitches bring up the colour from the row below, break the stripe and a colourwork pattern is created! By simply slipping some stitches you can create patterns that look much more complicated than they are. Socks are worked from toe up with short row heels and a small gusset. Size refers to sock foot circumference. Socks can be worked on double-pointed needles, two circular needles or on other types of needles convenient for the knitter for knitting small circumferences in the round. The pattern uses metric and imperial systems.

Breaking Stripes Socks by Arella Seaton Design

What Is Being Made

Breaking Stripes is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by Arella Seaton. These socks are worked from the toe up and feature colorwork created through strategic stitch slipping. The pattern includes short row heels and a small gusset for a comfortable, well-fitted sock. Sizing is based on sock foot circumference, with the sample shown in medium size.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern introduces knitters to colorwork through an accessible method that builds confidence without requiring complex techniques. The primary technique is stitch slipping, which creates the illusion of intricate colorwork patterns by bringing yarn color from previous rows to the surface. By slipping selected stitches across striped backgrounds, knitters can create visually complex patterns that are surprisingly straightforward to execute.

Additional techniques include:

  • Toe-up construction – socks are initiated from the toe and worked toward the cuff
  • Short row heels – a shaping method that creates a comfortable heel without requiring a separate heel flap
  • Gusset shaping – a small gusset provides ease and comfort around the foot
  • Knitting in the round – socks are worked circularly using needles suitable for small circumferences
  • Basic striping – the foundational colorwork technique that forms the base pattern

Stitches Used

While specific stitch counts are not detailed in the pattern description, the gauge is listed at 34 stitches over a measured distance, indicating a relatively fine gauge appropriate for 4 ply yarn. The pattern relies on fundamental knit stitches combined with slipped stitches to create the colorwork effect. Slipped stitches are worked by passing the working yarn over unworked stitches, allowing the color beneath to show through and creating the visual breaking of the stripes.

Materials and Yarn Weight

Breaking Stripes is designed for 4 ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that produces fine, detailed fabric ideal for socks. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn brands and colorways, offering flexibility in material selection.

The sample socks shown in the pattern were created using:

  • Main Color (MC): Laughing Lemur Soft Sock 4 ply in White Speckled colorway; 30 grams
  • Contrast Color (CC): Cascade Yarns Heritage Sock 4 ply; 40 grams

The pattern is written to accommodate both metric and imperial measurements, making it accessible to knitters using different measurement systems. Needles suitable for knitting small circumferences in the round are required—options include double-pointed needles, two circular needles, or other needle types preferred by the individual knitter.

Pattern Difficulty and Skill Development

Rated as intermediate difficulty, Breaking Stripes is designed for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore colorwork. The pattern serves as an excellent stepping stone from basic striped knitting into more advanced colorwork techniques, demonstrating how simple stitch manipulation can create sophisticated visual effects without requiring simultaneous yarn management or complex color changes.
