Bottle Gift Bag by Sam Hermes
Project Overview
The Bottle Gift Bag is a beginner-friendly crochet decoration designed by Sam Hermes as an eco-conscious alternative to disposable paper and plastic gift bags. This quick crochet project creates a reusable handmade bag perfect for presenting bottles as gifts on any occasion, from Valentine's Day to other celebrations. The finished bag can be used repeatedly and customized with decorative appliqués around the bottle neck for added personalization.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a fitted crochet bag designed to hold and present a bottle as a gift. The bag serves as a sustainable, decorative alternative to single-use packaging, combining functionality with handmade charm. The project is suitable for gifting bottles of wine, champagne, or other beverages while adding a personal, crafted touch that recipients can repurpose for storage or decoration.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Bottle Gift Bag employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern uses working in rounds with joining methods to create a structured, dimensional bag. Stitches are worked in continuous rounds, with slip stitches used to join rounds together. The pattern incorporates working into back loops only for specific sections, creating textural variation. Stitch markers are used throughout to track the beginning of rounds, ensuring consistent shaping and even stitch placement.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) - Foundation stitches used to begin rounds and create the base structure
- Slip Stitch (SS) - Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between rounds
- Double Crochet (Dc) - Primary stitch for building the main fabric of the bag
- Half Treble Crochet (Htr) - Taller stitch used for shaping and creating varied fabric texture
- Treble Crochet (Tr) - Extended stitch used for specific shaping sections
- Double Treble Crochet (Dtr) - Tallest stitch in the pattern, used for dramatic shaping or decorative elements
- Half Treble Crochet Back Loop Only (Htrblo) - Specialized technique working into only the back loop of stitches to create ridged texture and definition
Materials and Tools
The Bottle Gift Bag pattern calls for DK weight yarn in a total of 100g x 2 skeins, worked with two strands held together throughout the project. This doubling of yarn creates a thicker, more substantial fabric suitable for a structured gift bag. A 6mm crochet hook is used to work with the doubled yarn. Essential tools include a stitch marker for tracking round beginnings, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and scissors for cutting yarn. The pattern also recommends decorative ribbon for finishing touches around the bag opening or neck area. Yarn color choices are flexible, allowing crafters to select any DK weight colors to match personal preferences or gift-giving occasions.
Pattern Notes and Tips
The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout. An important notation detail is that the chain-2 at the beginning of each round counts as the first stitch of that round. Repeat instructions marked with asterisks (*-*) continue until the end of the round, with the final stitch joined using a slip stitch to create a seamless connection. The designer recommends having the intended bottle available during the crochet process to ensure proper fit and sizing. Optional appliqué embellishments can be added around the bottle neck after completion for extra decorative appeal, making each bag uniquely personalized.
