Product Description
This hat was inspired by those out-of-the-way bits of cobbled streets that you see in downtown Boston, my hometown. The textured stitch pattern, coupled with a soft inner lining creates a hat that will keep you warm and toasty even during the depths of a New England winter. And the seamless construction means that when you're finished with the lining, you can throw on your new hat without even bothering with a blocking – just the thing for a sudden Nor'easter! Pattern includes charted and written stitch pattern instructions. Sample shown was worked in Bartlettyarns Fisherman 2-ply and Berroco Ultra Alpaca.
Skills needed: casting on, working in the round, knitting, purling, decreasing, picking up stitches for a lining. Gauge: outer shell, 18 sts/24 rows over 4 in/10 cm in pattern using large needles; inner lining, 21 sts/30 rows over 4 in/10 cm in stockinette using smaller needles.
Boston Toque by Rachel Brown
What is Being Made
The Boston Toque is a knitted hat design created by independent designer Rachel Brown. This project celebrates the designer's connection to Boston, drawing inspiration from the city's unique character and Old World charm. The toque is a classic winter hat style, perfect for keeping warm during cold weather while maintaining a timeless aesthetic.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project suitable for crafters with intermediate skill level. The design employs traditional knitting techniques to construct a fitted, functional hat. Knitting allows for the creation of a stretchy, warm fabric that conforms to the wearer's head while providing excellent insulation.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch details are not fully outlined in the provided pattern information, the Boston Toque utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for hat construction. Intermediate knitters will find this project engaging, as it likely incorporates techniques such as ribbing for the brim and body shaping to achieve the classic toque silhouette.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: Aran weight yarn is used for this project, providing a medium thickness ideal for winter hats. Aran yarn knits up quickly while creating a fabric with good structure and warmth.
- Needles: Knitting needles appropriate for aran weight yarn are required. The specific needle size will be detailed in the complete pattern instructions.
Format
The Boston Toque is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it convenient to access and reference while working on your project.
