Boot Style Slippers Felted Knit for Women

What is Being Made

These are cozy boot-style slippers designed by Monique Rae Designs, crafted specifically for women with maximum ankle coverage. The slippers feature a felted knit construction that provides warmth and durability. Both left and right slippers are knit identically using the same pattern, with sizing options ranging from women's sizes 5/6 through 10/11 to accommodate various foot dimensions.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve the finished slipper structure. Felting is the primary finishing technique, which involves washing and agitating the knitted fabric to create a dense, matted textile that enhances durability and provides insulation. The pattern includes color coding for different sizes, allowing knitters to easily track which rows correspond to their chosen size. Row counters are recommended to maintain accurate stitch and row counts throughout the construction, with specific row numbers varying by size (ranging from row 29 for size 7/8 up to row 41 for size 10/11). The slippers also feature sole construction, with instructions provided for wide, narrow, and average sole options to customize the fit.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout most of the pattern is garter stitch, created by knitting all rows consecutively. This fundamental stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges that provides excellent structure for slipper construction. The garter stitch sections form the main body of the boot-style slipper, with specific row counts varying by size to achieve proper ankle height and foot coverage.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

These slippers are crafted using 100% worsted weight wool in a category 4 yarn weight. The yarn is used doubled throughout the entire pattern, meaning two strands are worked together simultaneously to create a thicker, warmer fabric suitable for felting. Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Size 5/6: approximately 5.2 ounces / 248 yards
  • Size 6/7: approximately 5.5 ounces / 277 yards
  • Size 7/8: approximately 5.8 ounces / 302 yards
  • Size 8/9: approximately 6.1 ounces / 327 yards
  • Size 9/10: approximately 6.4 ounces / 352 yards
  • Size 10/11: approximately 6.7 ounces / 381 yards

Actual yardage may vary depending on individual knitting tension, ankle height adjustments, sole size selection, and the specific yarn brand chosen. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques.

Additional Construction Details

Sewing is required to complete these slippers, indicating that after the knitted pieces are felted, assembly involves stitching components together. Optional embellishments such as pompoms may be added, though these are not required and will affect the final yardage used. The downloadable PDF format allows knitters to print and reference the pattern throughout the project, with clear size indicators and row-by-row instructions to guide construction from cast-on through completion.
