Boho Knit Basket in Bernat – Free Intermediate Knitting Pattern

The Boho Knit Basket is a free, downloadable PDF knitting pattern designed by the Bernat Design Team. It produces a sturdy, stylish cylindrical storage basket with a bohemian aesthetic, worked entirely in the round using two strands of Bernat Blanket super chunky yarn held together throughout. The finished basket measures approximately 11½ inches (29 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38 cm) tall when unfolded, making it a generous and practical home accessory suitable for storing blankets, yarn, toys, or other household items. A fold-back cuff is optional, allowing for a slightly shorter, decorative finish.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a single knitted storage basket or container worked from the bottom up. The base is constructed as a flat circular panel that is then joined and built upward into a tall cylindrical body. The top edge features a purl round that creates a neat visual border, and the cuff can be folded back for a decorative two-toned rolled edge. The overall silhouette is clean and modern with a textured, woven-look body that gives it its signature boho character.

Materials Required

  • Bernat Blanket yarn (10 oz / 300 g; 220 yds / 201 m per ball), a super chunky weight yarn
  • Contrast A – Coal (10040): 1 ball, approximately 185 yds / 170 m used
  • Contrast B – Persian Rug (10813): 1 ball, approximately 185 yds / 170 m used
  • One set of five U.S. size 11 (8 mm) double-pointed knitting needles
  • One U.S. size 11 (8 mm) circular knitting needle, 24 inches (61 cm) long, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • One stitch marker

The basket is worked holding one strand each of Contrast A and Contrast B together throughout the entire project. This double-stranding technique is essential for achieving the dense, structured fabric that allows the basket to hold its shape without any additional lining or stiffening.

Gauge

The pattern calls for a gauge of 7 stitches and 9 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using 2 strands of yarn held together. Achieving the correct gauge is important for ensuring the basket reaches its intended dimensions and maintains a firm, upright structure.

Techniques Used

  • Working in the round – The entire basket, from base to top, is knitted in continuous rounds rather than flat rows, eliminating the need for seaming
  • Magic cast-on / double-pointed needle start – The base begins with just 8 stitches cast onto double-pointed needles, divided across 4 needles (2 stitches per needle), a classic technique for starting small-circumference circular knitting
  • Transitioning from double-pointed to circular needles – As the stitch count increases during the base shaping, the knitter switches from the set of five double-pointed needles to the longer circular needle to comfortably accommodate the growing number of stitches
  • Short-row-free circular shaping – The circular base is shaped using evenly spaced increase rounds separated by plain knit rounds, creating a smooth, flat disc
  • Double-stranding – Holding two separate yarn strands together as one creates a thicker, more durable fabric ideal for a functional container
  • Optional fold-back cuff – The finished top edge can be folded down to create a decorative cuff detail

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – The foundational stitch used throughout the base and body
  • Purl – Used on specific rounds to create clear visual ridge lines that define the transition between the base and the body, and to finish the top edge
  • Kfb (Knit into the front and back) – An increase stitch used during the
