Blue Star Jumper by SailorWifeKnits

Garment Overview

The Blue Star jumper is a seamless, top-down knitted sweater designed for intermediate knitters. This classic pullover features a comfortable, relaxed fit with strategic shaping throughout, making it suitable for everyday wear. The design emphasizes both comfort and wearability through thoughtful construction techniques and garment shaping.

Construction Method and Techniques

This jumper is worked seamlessly from the top down, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous garment. The construction begins with the yoke, which is worked in the round using ribbed stitches and shaped with strategic increases to create the proper shoulder and neckline fit. The back of the jumper features short rows, a shaping technique that raises the back panel to provide maximal comfortable fit and better accommodate the natural contours of the body.

After the yoke is completed, the pattern divides for the body and sleeves. The sleeve stitches are placed on hold while the body is worked downward to completion. Once the body reaches the desired length, the sleeve stitches are transferred back to the needle and worked top-down to the cuff, maintaining continuity throughout the garment.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed Stitches: The yoke is worked in rib stitch, providing elasticity and structure at the neckline and shoulder area
  • 1x1 Rib: Used for finishing the body and sleeve cuffs, creating a neat, stretchy edge
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface
  • Decreases: Used throughout the sleeves to shape them to a bracelet length, tapering gradually from shoulder to cuff

Sizing and Fit

The Blue Star jumper is available in five sizes, ranging from size 1 to size 5, with bust measurements of approximately 34 inches (86 cm), 38.5 inches (100 cm), 43 inches (110 cm), 47 inches (120 cm), and 49 inches (125 cm). The sample shown in photographs is size 1 with a 34-inch bust and approximately 4 inches (10 cm) of positive ease, photographed on a model who is 172 cm tall. This positive ease ensures comfortable movement and a relaxed fit rather than a fitted silhouette.

Yarn and Materials

The Blue Star jumper is designed to be worked in Børsted Alpakka (Brushed Alpaca) from Sandnes Garn in colorway 606. This yarn composition is 96% brushed alpaca and 4% nylon, providing softness with added durability. Each 50-gram skein yields approximately 110 meters of yarn. The yarn weight falls within the aran, chunky, and heavy worsted range, creating a substantial, warm fabric suitable for cooler weather.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle seamless garment construction, top-down shaping, and techniques such as short rows. The combination of in-the-round knitting, yoke shaping, and coordinated body and sleeve construction provides a rewarding project for developing knitters.

The Blue Star jumper pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing for immediate access and the ability to print or view the instructions digitally while working on the project.

Love the Customer Service

The instructions were difficult to follow due to how sentences worded. Also pattern gauge didn’t match sizes listed for the gauge. I did 2nd size 38.5”. My knitting gauge was 15 stitches = 4”. Yet came out to 45”. I double checked sweater gauge in numerous areas consistently 15 stitches/4”. I had to pull out completed body and do in smallest size adjust the gauge. Had to contact you a few times to get clarification. I’ve been knitting for years. I know instructions sometimes can be a bit...
