Product Description
“Blue Skies” is an asymmetric triangular shawl, featuring a reversible lace pattern of tiny cables.
While this is a not-too-complicated project, it nevertheless requires patience and attention to detail. The stitch pattern, which is composed of knit and purl stitches, yarn overs, double yarn overs, as well as crossed stitches, is worked in every row, in right side as well as wrong side rows.
The 17-page pattern contains detailed instructions, ample explanations about the construction, and a step-by step photo tutorial for the special bind-off method used, but the stitch pattern itself is not written out row-by-row. While the chart legend lists how to work each symbol used in the chart, and the detailed instructions explain how to read the chart, chart reading skills are required!
For a medium-sized shawl, a total amount of approximately 400 m (437 yds) of yarn is needed.
Blue Skies Knitted Lace Shawl by Natalia Sha
What Is Being Made
Blue Skies is a knitted lace shawl designed by Natalia Sha. This intermediate-level knitting project creates an elegant lace shawl suitable for knitters with some experience in working with lace patterns and shaping techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The shawl is constructed through traditional hand knitting techniques, combining lace work with shaping to create a finished garment. The design incorporates lace patterning, which requires attention to yarn overs, decreases, and stitch placement to achieve the characteristic openwork aesthetic of lace knitting.
Stitches and Lace Work
As a lace shawl, Blue Skies employs fundamental lace knitting stitches and techniques. Lace knitting typically involves the strategic use of yarn overs to create decorative holes and decreases (such as knit two together or slip-slip-knit) to maintain stitch counts while forming the open, airy patterns characteristic of lace shawls. The specific stitch patterns and their arrangement are detailed within the pattern instructions.
Materials and Tools Required
Needles: US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, or needles appropriate to your yarn weight as indicated on the yarn ball band. Needle size should be matched to the 4-ply yarn weight for proper gauge and fabric drape.
Yarn: 4-ply weight yarn is specified for this project. This lightweight yarn is ideal for lace shawls, allowing the delicate stitch definition to show clearly while creating a fabric with excellent drape and flow.
Additional Tools:
- Crochet hook sized 3.5 mm for the binding-off process
- Blocking mat and pins for finishing and shaping the completed shawl
Pattern Format
Blue Skies is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The complete pattern spans 17 pages and includes all necessary instructions for completing the shawl.
Designer Information
This pattern is designed by Natalia Sha, an independent knitwear designer. The original pattern was translated from Russian by Katharina Sokiran. The pattern is intended for individual, non-commercial use only.
