Bloomsbury Jacket in Sirdar Wool Rich Aran – Pattern 7332

The Bloomsbury Jacket is a beautifully textured, fully fashioned knitted jacket designed by Sirdar and worked in Sirdar Wool Rich Aran. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern produces a classic, structured jacket featuring richly detailed stitch panels that combine cables, bobbles, and seed-stitch diamonds for a sophisticated, artisan finish. The pattern is graded across six sizes, making it accessible to a wide range of knitters, from those making a 32/34 inch bust through to larger sizes up to a 52/54 inch bust — a genuinely inclusive size range that covers actual finished measurements from 91 cm (36 in) to 141 cm (55½ in).

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a long-line knitted jacket with set-in or shaped sleeves. The full length ranges from approximately 75 cm (29½ in) to 88 cm (34¾ in) depending on size, making it a substantial, wearable outer layer. Sleeve length is given as approximately 46–48 cm (18–19 in) and is noted as adjustable, giving knitters flexibility to customise the fit. The jacket fastens with 10 or 11 buttons depending on size, adding a classic, tailored element to the finished garment.

Techniques Used

  • Cable knitting — stitches are slipped to a cable needle and worked out of sequence to create twisted, rope-like or crossed cable motifs across the fabric panels.
  • Bobble making (MB) — a five-step bobble technique is used: multiple stitches are worked into a single stitch, then turned and worked back across to create a raised, three-dimensional bobble. The specific method involves working (k1, p1, k1, p1) into one stitch, turning and working four stitches, then decreasing back down with k2tog twice and a final p2tog.
  • Twisted stitches (T2B and T2F) — these are mini cable movements worked over just two stitches using a cable needle, twisting stitches to the back or front to create diagonal lines and diamond outlines within the pattern panels.
  • Reversed stocking stitch — the purl side of stocking stitch is used as the right side of the fabric, creating a soft, matte, textured background that sets off the cable and bobble panels beautifully.
  • Seed stitch (moss stitch) panels — alternating knit and purl stitches within pattern repeats create a dense, non-curling fabric texture used within the decorative panels.
  • Shaping and fully fashioned decreasing — the pattern includes structured shaping for the body and sleeves, requiring knitters to work increases and decreases at set intervals to achieve the correct silhouette.
  • Tension swatching — the pattern strongly emphasises checking tension before beginning, with two separate tension measurements required: one over the diamond and bobble pattern panel and one over reversed stocking stitch.

Stitches Used

  • Reversed stocking stitch — the primary background stitch, worked with the purl side facing as the right side.
  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) — fundamental stitches forming the basis of all pattern elements.
  • Cable stitch (C11F) — a large eleven-stitch cable crossing worked over a cable needle, slipping five stitches to the front and working a (k1, p1) rib sequence across all eleven stitches to create a bold, decorative cable panel.
  • T2B and T2F — two-stitch twists worked to the back and front respectively, used to trace the outline of diamond motifs across the fabric.
  • Make Bobble (MB) — a standalone bobble stitch worked at specific points within the pattern repeat to add three-dimensional texture.
  • K2tog and p2tog — standard right-leaning decrease stitches used both in bobble construction and in garment shaping.
  • Seed stitch / moss stitch — alternating k1,
