Blips Shawl by All Knit Up Designs
Project Overview
Blips is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl pattern designed by All Knit Up Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a triangular shawl measuring 72 inches wide by 27 inches deep (183 cm by 69 cm), making it an ideal accessory for layering or draping. The shawl is constructed using straightforward knitting techniques with all shaping worked on one side of the fabric, making it an excellent introduction to shawl construction for newer knitters.
What You'll Create
The Blips shawl is a crescent-shaped or triangular wrap that combines elegant simplicity with functional sizing. The finished dimensions provide generous coverage while remaining lightweight and portable. This design is perfect for adding texture and warmth to any wardrobe without overwhelming the wearer.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners while building essential skills. The primary construction method involves working flat on circular needles, with increases strategically placed to create the shawl's distinctive shape. The shaping strategy is particularly beginner-friendly: increases are worked on one side only, alternating between the first stitch of odd-numbered rows and the last stitch of even-numbered rows. This asymmetrical increase pattern creates the shawl's triangular silhouette.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Blips is worked almost entirely in garter stitch, one of the most fundamental and forgiving knitting stitches. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a reversible, textured fabric with distinctive horizontal bumps. The pattern utilizes the following stitches and abbreviations:
- Knit (K): The basic knit stitch
- Knit Front and Back (KFB): An increase technique that creates one new stitch from a single stitch by knitting into both the front and back loops
- Slip (Sl): Passing a stitch from one needle to another without working it
The garter stitch construction provides excellent stitch definition and helps newer knitters easily identify their progress. Gauge is measured at 20 stitches and 24 garter bumps over 4 inches (10 cm) in blocked garter stitch, ensuring proper sizing and fabric drape.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern calls for 840 yards (768 meters) of fingering weight yarn, which falls within the 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weight categories. The recommended yarn is Malabrigo Yarn Mechita, a 100% Merino wool available in 420-yard, 100-gram skeins, meaning you'll need two skeins to complete the project. Merino wool provides excellent elasticity, softness, and breathability, making it ideal for a shawl that will be worn close to the skin.
Needles and Tools
Construction requires US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) or longer. Circular needles accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl grows, and the longer length prevents stitches from becoming crowded. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends after blocking.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with a simple three-stitch cast-on using the knitted cast-on method (with a tutorial link provided in the pattern). From this minimal foundation, the shawl grows through a series of alternating increase rows. The first four rows establish the increase pattern: odd-numbered rows (1, 3, 5, 7) increase one stitch at the beginning, while even-numbered rows (2, 4, 6) increase one stitch at the end. This creates balanced, symmetrical growth across the width of the shawl.
Skill Level and Suitability
Rated as a beginner pattern, Blips is accessible to knitters who understand basic knit stitches and can work flat on circular needles. The straightforward stitch pattern and logical increase placement make it an ideal project for building confidence and understanding shawl construction principles. The pattern includes helpful abbreviations and references to online tutorials, supporting independent learning and skill development.
