Knitted Blanket with Crochet Border and Sailboat Appliqué – Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine 120, Pattern 6737

This free downloadable PDF pattern (No. 6737) from Schachenmayr guides you through creating a square knitted blanket measuring approximately 68 cm wide by 68 cm long. The design combines a classic knitted body with a decorative crocheted border and a charming hand-knitted sailboat appliqué, making it an ideal project for a baby or child's room. The pattern is published by Coats PLC under the Schachenmayr brand and is available as a free download.

The Main Blanket Body

The blanket is knitted flat using a stitch pattern based on a cast-on multiple of 13 stitches plus 4 edge stitches. The body is worked to a height of 60 cm (199 rows), after which all stitches are cast off following the completion of a 7th pattern row. The main body is worked in the yarn colour Royal (shade 00151), which forms the dominant background of the piece.

The Crocheted Border

Once the knitted body is complete, the blanket receives a multi-round crocheted border that adds both structure and a colourful decorative finish. The border is worked as follows:

  • One round of double crochet (UK terminology) / single crochet (US terminology) in Royal, followed by one round in Apfel (shade 00173), working around the entire blanket.
  • At each corner, 3 double crochets are worked into the corner stitch on every round to create neat, square corners.
  • The sequence of alternating Royal and Apfel rounds is then repeated a further 4 times, with each round after the first pair worked into the back loop only of the previous round's stitches — a technique that creates a subtle ridged texture and gives the border a more defined, structured appearance.
  • Yarn ends are cut and woven in securely to finish.

Working into the back loop only is a popular crochet technique that produces a horizontal ridge on the surface of the fabric, adding visual interest and a slightly firmer edge to the border.

The Sailboat Appliqué

A key decorative feature of this blanket is a knitted sailboat appliqué, which is sewn onto the surface of the finished blanket as shown in the pattern photograph. The appliqué is referenced as being the same as the one described in the companion pattern Modell 6736 (a pullover), and consists of two separately knitted pieces:

The Boat Hull

  • Knitted in Marine (shade 00150), worked from the top down.
  • 26 stitches are cast on and 2 rows of garter stitch are worked first.
  • The piece then continues in stocking stitch (stockinette), with shaping worked over 6 decrease rows: at the beginning of each right-side row, the edge stitch is knitted together with the following stitch (k2tog); at the end of each right-side row, a slipped stitch decrease is used — the stitch before the edge stitch is slipped, the edge stitch is knitted, and the slipped stitch is passed over.
  • After 12 rows of stocking stitch, the remaining 14 stitches are cast off.

The Sail

  • Knitted in Kirsche (shade 00131).
  • 13 stitches are cast on and the piece is worked in stocking stitch, beginning with a purl (wrong-side) row.
  • From the 4th row onward, decreases are worked at the beginning of every right-side row using a slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skpo/ssk) method, repeated 11 times in total, tapering the sail to a point.
