Product Description

This 60"x72" blanket was inspired by Blackberry Cable pillow cover design. I was asked by a customer to knit a blanket in the same pattern and this is the result. Its knit in a double thickness, worsted yarn.

This pattern is really for the experienced knitter who is willing to put in a lot of hours of knitting!

Its knit back and forth on a circular needle to accomodate the large number of stitches.

You will need to know how to use a cable needle and be able to knit two different patterns over different numbers of rows.... but it will be worth the hard work!

Blackberry Cables Throw Blanket by LadyshipDesigns

Project Overview

The Blackberry Cables Throw is a knitted blanket designed as a heirloom quality piece measuring 60 inches by 72 inches (152 by 182 centimeters). This advanced-level knitting project is worked as a single piece using the back-and-forth row method on a circular needle, creating a substantial and luxurious finished textile suitable for display or everyday use.

Construction Method and Technique

This blanket employs a distinctive construction approach using double thickness worsted weight yarn, which creates depth and richness in the final piece. The pattern is knit in one continuous piece rather than assembled from separate components, ensuring seamless integration of the cable design throughout. Knitters work rows back and forth on a circular needle, a technique that accommodates the large number of stitches required for the blanket's generous dimensions without the limitations of straight needles.

Cable Work and Stitch Details

The Blackberry Cables design features cable stitches as the primary decorative element. Cable knitting requires the use of a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted rope-like texture that gives this blanket its visual interest and tactile appeal. The cable technique involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to produce dimensional patterns. This advanced stitch work demands attention to detail and experience with cable manipulation, making this project suitable for experienced knitters.

Yarn Requirements and Weight Options

The pattern calls for approximately 75 ounces or 2,100 grams of medium weight yarn, equaling roughly 4,620 yards or 4,225 meters. The blanket is specifically designed using double thickness worsted weight yarn, which means strands are held together to create the desired fabric density and warmth. Alternatively, super bulky yarn may be substituted, though this would require approximately half the yardage. Knitters are advised to purchase extra yarn to ensure project completion and to verify that all skeins match in dye lot, preventing color variations in the finished blanket.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires a circular needle in 8mm size (US 11 or UK 1), which provides the necessary length and capacity for managing the large stitch count. Additional tools include a cable needle for executing the cable stitches, a large-eyed sewing needle for finishing and weaving in yarn ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a row counter to track progress through the many rows required for this substantial project.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches by 4 inches (10 by 10 centimeters) when worked on 8mm needles with the double thickness worsted yarn. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions. The pattern instructions emphasize the importance of working a tension square before beginning the main project, a practice that prevents costly mistakes and ensures the blanket reaches the specified 60 by 72 inch size.

Project Scope and Time Commitment

This blanket project requires significant time investment, as noted in the pattern description. The combination of yardage, cable work complexity, and the advanced difficulty level means this is a long-term project suitable for dedicated knitters. The resulting piece is described as heirloom quality, indicating that the finished blanket is intended to be a treasured, durable textile that can be passed down and enjoyed for many years.
