Product Description
This design comes in two versions (gloves or fingerless mittens) and features leaf, cable and slip stitch patterns. It has an asymmetrical thumb gusset, which allows the stitch pattern to stretch over the whole back of the hand without interruption. On the palm side the slipped stitches are smaller, and the fingers have no slipped stitches on their inside at all. This way there will be no risk of long slipped stitches catching on anything you handle whilst wearing the gloves.
The sizes are Women's S/M and Women's M/L with a best fit for 18.5cm (7¼”) or 19.5cm (7⅝”) above thumb on dominant hand respectively.
The pattern is for fingering weight yarn.
Birnam Gloves and Fingerless Mitts by Dagmar Mora
Project Overview
Birnam Gloves and Fingerless Mitts is a knitting pattern designed by Dagmar Mora that offers two versatile versions of hand coverings in a single downloadable PDF. This intermediate-level knitting project combines decorative stitch work with functional design, inspired by an autumn visit to the Scottish woodlands of Birnam. The pattern features intricate stitch patterns that evoke the visual aesthetic of bare branches with lingering autumn foliage, making it both a practical accessory and a wearable work of art.
Design Features and Inspiration
The Birnam Gloves and Fingerless Mitts showcase thoughtful design choices that balance aesthetics with wearability. The stitch patterns incorporate leaf, cable, and slip stitch motifs that collectively create the impression of a thicket of branches with scattered autumn leaves. The designer chose yarn in vivid yellow to evoke the colorful memories of the Birnam woodland landscape, creating a piece that tells a story through both color and texture.
Construction Techniques
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The most notable structural feature is the asymmetrical thumb gusset, which is engineered to allow the decorative stitch pattern to flow uninterrupted across the entire back of the hand. This design choice demonstrates thoughtful pattern placement and construction planning.
The pattern strategically varies stitch placement based on hand location. On the palm side, slipped stitches are worked at a smaller scale to reduce bulk and improve comfort. The fingers feature no slipped stitches on their inside surfaces, which prevents long slipped stitches from catching on objects during wear—a practical consideration that enhances the functionality of the finished gloves.
Stitches Used
- Leaf stitch patterns – Creates the botanical motif reminiscent of autumn foliage
- Cable stitches – Adds dimension and texture to the design
- Slip stitches – Used strategically throughout, with varying placement depending on the section of the glove for both aesthetic and practical purposes
- Stockinette stitch – The base stitch referenced in the tension gauge
Sizing and Gauge
The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different hand sizes. Sizing options include Women's S/M and M/L. The tension is specified as 30 stitches and 42 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch, which is essential information for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the appropriate thickness for detailed stitch definition while maintaining the drape and comfort necessary for hand coverings. The designer's choice of vivid yellow yarn is integral to the aesthetic, though crafters may select yarn colors according to personal preference. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn are required, along with basic finishing tools for seaming and weaving in ends.
Pattern Versions
The downloadable PDF includes instructions for two distinct versions of the design:
- Gloves – Full-length hand coverings with fingers
- Fingerless Mitts – Hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed
Both versions feature the same decorative stitch patterns and construction techniques, allowing knitters to choose the version that best suits their climate needs and personal preference.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and construction techniques. The combination of multiple stitch types, asymmetrical shaping, and strategic stitch placement requires attention to detail and comfort with reading stitch patterns, making it an excellent project for advancing knitting skills.
