Berty Bottle Warmer in Berroco Remix Chunky – Pattern Summary

The Berty Bottle Warmer is a charming, colorful knitted cover designed to fit an average hot water bottle. Designed by Margaux Hufnagel and published by Berroco, this pattern is rated intermediate in skill level and is available as a downloadable PDF. The finished cover measures approximately 19 inches (48 cm) around and 13 inches (33 cm) high, making it a snug and practical fit for a standard hot water bottle. It makes a wonderful handmade gift or a cozy addition to any home.

What Is Being Made

Berty is a knitted hot water bottle cover worked in the round from the bottom up. It features a striped colorwork body accented with decorative bobbles, creating a playful and textured fabric. The design is worked seamlessly using a Turkish cast-on at the base, which creates a closed, rounded bottom perfectly shaped to cradle a hot water bottle.

Colorway and Yarn

The pattern calls for Berroco Remix Chunky, a chunky-weight yarn sold in 100-gram balls. Five colors are used in total:

  • #9901 Birch – Main Color (MC)
  • #9922 Buttercup – Contrast Color 1 (CC1)
  • #9930 Smoke – Contrast Color 2 (CC2)
  • #9960 Strawberry – Contrast Color 3 (CC3)
  • #9984 Ocean – Contrast Color 4 (CC4)

One ball of each color is required. The pattern also notes that leftover contrast colors from the Lilo, Lina, and Linde pillow patterns can be used for this project, making Berty an excellent stash-busting companion piece within the Berroco collection.

Needles and Notions

The cover is knitted using two 24-inch (60 cm) circular needles in size US 10 / 6 mm, or the size needed to achieve gauge. The two-circular-needle method allows for seamless knitting in the round, particularly useful when working the small circumference of the bottle base. An average-size hot water bottle is also needed to check fit.

Gauge

The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Checking gauge before beginning is strongly encouraged to ensure accurate finished dimensions.

Techniques Used

  • Turkish Cast-On – A provisional, seamless cast-on method used to begin the base of the bottle cover. It creates live stitches on two needles simultaneously, allowing the knitter to work in the round from the very bottom of the cover without a seam or gap.
  • Knitting in the Round – The entire cover is worked circularly using two circular needles, producing a seamless tube.
  • Increases (M1L and M1R) – Make One Left and Make One Right increases are used in an increase round to shape the rounded base of the cover. These increases are repeated every round for a total of nine increase rounds, expanding the stitch count from 32 stitches to 68 stitches.
  • Stripe Colorwork – The body of the cover features a repeating two-round stripe sequence alternating between the main color and CC1, followed by four-round blocks of each remaining contrast color. This creates a bold, graphic striped pattern.
  • Bobble Stitch (MB – Make Bobble) – A special technique used to add dimensional texture to the cover. The bobble is created by knitting into the front, back, front, and back of a single stitch to produce four loops, then lifting the first three loops over the last, leaving one stitch. This produces a small, raised bobble on the fabric surface.
  • Blocking – The gauge swatch and finished piece are intended to be blocked, as the stated gauge is measured after blocking.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch
