Product Description
The perfect pair of leg warmers, for those days when you really want to wear that skirt or dress, and it’s just a wee bit too chilly! Wear them pulled up or pushed down. Beniga is worked from the bottom, starting with the cuff which is worked sideways with the ends grafted together. Stitches are then picked up to knit the lacy rib for the leg. Lots to keep your interest!
Size: Adult, one size. Approximately 24 cm around ancle, 28 cm around the middle of the leg – unstretched. Since the leg is worked in rib, the leg warmers have a lot of stretch to give.

Heavy worsted or aran weight yarn; Appr 200 meters / 220 yards (Cuff uses about 20 meters / 21 yards per leg warmer, in case you want to use a second color.)

Beniga Leg Warmers and Boot Cuffs by Yarn-Madness
What is Being Made
Beniga is a pair of adult leg warmers designed for layering versatility. These leg warmers measure approximately 24 cm around the ankle and 28 cm around the middle of the leg when unstretched. The design allows for flexible styling—wear them pulled up to the knee or pushed down as boot cuffs—making them a practical accessory for adding warmth when wearing skirts or dresses in cooler weather. The lacy rib construction provides significant stretch, allowing the leg warmers to adapt comfortably to different leg sizes and shapes.
Construction and Techniques
Beniga employs a distinctive bottom-up construction method that creates visual interest and structural integrity. The project begins by working the cuff sideways, which means the ribbed cuff is knitted horizontally across its width. Once the cuff is complete, the two ends are grafted together using a seamless joining technique, creating a finished edge without a bulky seam. After the cuff foundation is established, stitches are picked up along one edge to begin knitting the lacy rib section that forms the main leg portion of the warmer. This two-part construction—a sideways cuff followed by a picked-up lacy rib leg—creates a garment with both structural interest and visual appeal.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure, particularly for gauge calculations. The leg features a lacy rib construction, which combines knit and purl stitches in a ribbed pattern with lace elements to create texture and stretch. Grafting is used to seamlessly join the cuff ends together. The pattern provides both a cuff chart and written instructions, allowing knitters to follow either charted or written format depending on their preference and skill level.
Materials and Tools
Beniga requires heavy worsted or aran weight yarn, with approximately 200 meters or 220 yards needed for the complete pair of leg warmers. The cuff alone uses about 20 meters or 21 yards per leg warmer, making it possible to use a contrasting second color for the cuff if desired. Knitters can choose between double-pointed needles or a circular needle using the magic loop technique, with sizes 4.5 mm (US 7) and 5 mm (US 8) required. A single stitch marker is needed to track pattern repeats. The recommended gauge is 4 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch using the larger needles.
Difficulty Level
Beniga is rated as a beginner-friendly project, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. Despite the beginner classification, the pattern includes engaging techniques such as sideways construction, grafting, and lace rib work, providing learning opportunities while remaining manageable for those building their skills.
