Bellingham Pullover - Women's Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Bellingham Pullover is an easy-to-knit women's sweater designed by Teresa Chorzepa. This pullover features a classic crew neckline and is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 40 inches (101.5cm) to 56 inches (142cm) and center back lengths from 20 inches (51cm) to 25 inches (63.5cm). The pattern is ideal for knitters seeking a beginner-friendly garment with a timeless, versatile design.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs a combination of construction methods to create a well-fitted pullover. The garment is worked flat on straight needles for the main body and sleeves, then seamed together for a polished finish. The neckband is worked in the round using a circular needle, adding structural integrity to the neckline. The sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning you begin knitting from the lower edge and work upward toward the shoulders, allowing for easy fitting adjustments as you progress.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Bellingham Pullover showcases a K1, P1 Rib stitch pattern throughout the garment. This classic ribbed texture provides excellent elasticity and recovery, ensuring the sweater maintains its shape through wear and washing. The ribbed construction creates vertical lines that are both visually flattering and functionally supportive. The pattern includes shaping techniques such as raglan armhole decreases, which are worked using standard knitting decreases to create the characteristic diagonal lines from the armpit to the neckline.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Bellingham Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns Newport, a sophisticated blend composed of 67% cotton, 23% linen, and 10% polyamide. This fiber combination creates a breathable, durable fabric ideal for warm-weather wear. The yarn is a worsted weight yarn, with each ball containing 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and 137 yards (125 meters). Depending on your size, you will need between 9 and 13 balls of yarn to complete the project.

Needles and Tools Required

  • One set of size 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles for working the main body and sleeves flat
  • One size 7 (4.5mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40.5cm) long for knitting the neckband in the round
  • Cable needle for any cable techniques (if applicable)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when worked in K1, P1 Rib. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and proper fit. The pattern emphasizes taking time to check your gauge before beginning, as even small variations can significantly impact the final dimensions of your sweater.

Difficulty Level

Rated as beginner difficulty, the Bellingham Pullover is an excellent choice for knitters new to garment construction or those seeking a straightforward, confidence-building project. The combination of basic stitches, simple shaping, and clear construction methods makes this pattern accessible while still producing a polished, professional-looking finished garment.
