Product Description

Before Sunrise is a crescent shaped shawl with a soft and lofty look and just enough amount of drape. The sample lace mohair shawl was made with two strands of lace weight yarn held together, one of which is a smooth yarn, to add body and drape, and another one is lace mohair yarn, to add softness and luxurious feel to this accessory. The shawl can also be knit in fingering or sock weight yarn. This shawl design features reversible stitch patterns (eyelets, lace/mesh and garter stitch) that create an equally beautiful fabric on both sides. The shawl is knit bottom up and shaped with short rows technique. By changing the colours of the yarn as you progress or using a gradient yarn to show it off to its best advantage, you create the fabric with stripes and semicircular shapes.

The pattern is given in three sizes.

Before Sunrise Crescent Shawl by Alla Saenko

What is Being Made

Before Sunrise is a crescent-shaped knit shawl designed by Alla Saenko. This lightweight accessory features a soft and lofty appearance with elegant drape, making it an ideal layering piece or wrap. The pattern is available in three sizes, with the featured sample showcasing the Small size. The shawl's crescent silhouette creates a flattering, semicircular shape that works beautifully as a shoulder wrap or decorative accessory.

Construction Technique

This shawl is knit from the bottom up using the short rows shaping technique. Short rows allow the knitter to create the distinctive crescent shape by increasing fabric depth in specific sections while maintaining the overall structure. This method provides precise shaping control and contributes to the garment's elegant drape and dimensional form.

A key design feature of Before Sunrise is its reversible stitch patterns. Both sides of the finished shawl display equally beautiful fabric, making it a versatile accessory that looks polished from any angle. The pattern can be knit either unblocked or blocked with blocking wires and pins, with the lace pattern appearing attractive in both presentations. Blocking enhances stitch definition and opens up the lace elements for a more refined appearance.

Stitch Patterns Used

Before Sunrise incorporates three primary stitch types that work together to create visual interest and texture:

  • Eyelets: Small decorative holes that add delicate detailing and contribute to the lightweight quality
  • Lace and mesh stitches: Open stitch patterns that create an airy, breathable fabric with sophisticated visual appeal
  • Garter stitch: Provides textural contrast and structural stability throughout the design

The combination of these reversible stitches ensures that the shawl maintains its beauty regardless of which side faces outward, a hallmark of thoughtful shawl design.

Yarn and Materials

Before Sunrise accommodates flexible yarn choices, allowing knitters to customize their finished piece. The pattern works with either of these yarn configurations:

  • A single strand of fingering or sock weight yarn for a traditional, delicate construction
  • Two strands of different lace weight yarns held together for added texture and visual complexity

The featured sample demonstrates the two-strand approach, combining a smooth lace yarn with a lace mohair yarn. This pairing creates the soft, lofty appearance characteristic of the design while allowing the mohair to add subtle texture and dimension. The yarn choice directly influences the final aesthetic: solid color yarns create a cohesive look, while gradient or multi-colored yarns showcase the crescent and striped effects that emerge through the shaping and construction process.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, Before Sunrise is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The short rows shaping method and reversible stitch patterns require attention to detail and understanding of how these techniques interact, making this pattern an excellent project for developing advanced shawl-knitting skills.
