Beeline Asymmetric Shawl by Amanda Scheuzger
What is Being Made
Beeline is an advanced-level asymmetric knit shawl designed to showcase a gradient color progression. The finished shawl measures approximately 110 inches across the wingspan with a deepest point of 23 inches, making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or as a statement accessory. The asymmetric construction and strategic color placement create visual interest through the interplay of contrasting hues.
Yarn Materials
This pattern calls for Marianated Yarns Scrumptious HT, a premium 4-ply yarn blend consisting of 80% superwash merino, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon. Each 100-gram skein yields 400 yards (366 meters). The pattern requires one main color skein in Spelunking plus six coordinating mini-skeins from the Perfection Set in Beekeeper, or six individual mini-skeins of approximately 133 yards (122 meters) each at 33 grams per skein. The six contrast colors used in the sample are Beeswax (lightest), Protect the Pollinators, Honeycomb, Dumbledore, Queen Bee, and Hive Mind (darkest), creating a beautiful gradient effect from light to dark.
Needles and Tools
Knitters will need a US Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle measuring 40 inches (100 cm) in length. Additional tools include two cable needles, stitch markers as referenced in the pattern notes, and a tapestry needle for finishing. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Beeline employs several advanced knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance:
- Slip Stitch Cables: These decorative cable elements add textural depth and visual movement throughout the shawl without requiring the complexity of traditional cable crosses.
- Garter Stitch Sections: Provides a stable, textured foundation in portions of the design.
- Lace Sections: Openwork lace creates an airy, elegant aesthetic that contrasts with the denser stitch areas and allows the yarn's gradient colors to shine through.
- Asymmetric Construction: The shawl's uneven shape is intentional, creating a modern, artistic silhouette.
Gauge and Specifications
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 24 stitches and 50 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the primary stitch pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the specified finished measurements and ensuring proper drape of the completed shawl.
Difficulty Level
This is an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with cable techniques, lace construction, and color work. The combination of slip stitch cables, garter notions, and lace sections requires strong foundational skills and the ability to read and follow complex stitch patterns.
