Product Description
Bee Wise. Bee Kind. Bee Thoughtful. Bee Good. Bee OK with Who You Are.
Just BEE Yourself. My father-in-law was a beekeeper and had a van with no seats in it except the front two. He used it to transport hives and there were always a few stray bees in it. I learned so much in that time. Honey never goes bad, as long as no water gets into it. Crystallization is ok, just heat slowly to re-liquefy. Bees are extremely important to our world. Enjoy this homage to one important little BEE-ING. And thank you to Sophie Allport for the inspirational Mug!
Bee Yourself Hat by Idle Hands Knits
Project Overview
The Bee Yourself Hat is an intermediate-level knitted beanie designed by Lisa McFetridge of Idle Hands Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern celebrates the importance of bees and self-acceptance with a charming bee motif. The design features a playful bee character worked into the fabric, making it both a functional accessory and a wearable tribute to these essential pollinators.
What Is Being Made
A knitted hat in preemie size featuring a bee-themed design. The hat combines colorwork knitting with embellishment techniques to create a whimsical, detailed bee illustration on the crown or body of the hat.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Two-color stranded knitting: The pattern employs a two-color-per-row technique, meaning two yarn colors are worked simultaneously within each row to create the colorwork design
- Duplicate stitch embellishment: After the main knit is complete, additional details—specifically the bee wings and yellow stripes—are added using duplicate stitch, a surface embroidery technique that covers existing knit stitches
- Color carrying option: While the pattern is written to make duplicate stitch the primary method for adding extra colors (making it more accessible), knitters comfortable with the technique may choose to carry additional colors during the knitting process itself, though this requires increased yardage
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern utilizes standard knit and purl stitches as the foundation, with colorwork created through stranded knitting methods. Duplicate stitch—a post-knitting embroidery technique—is used to add the bee's wings and yellow stripe details with precision and dimensional effect.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern was created using Valley Yarns Huntington Fingering weight yarn. However, the pattern is designed to work with any fingering-weight yarn that meets the specified gauge. Fingering weight yarn (also called sock weight) is a fine, lightweight yarn typically ranging from 3-ply to 4-ply construction, making it ideal for detailed colorwork and a refined fabric suitable for a fitted hat. Knitters will need yarn in at least three colors: a primary color (white is shown in the original), yellow, and black or dark color for the bee details.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork techniques. The two-color stranded knitting and duplicate stitch embellishment require comfort with managing multiple yarns and working with embroidery on completed knit fabric, but the pattern's written structure makes these techniques accessible without requiring advanced color-carrying skills during the main knit.
